All India Council of Sports: Overview

Question : GoI has constituted an All Indian Council of Sports for better governance by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Provide an overview of the All India Council of Sports.

- GoI has constituted an All India Council of Sports which will be an advisory body for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports

- Advice rendered by the council will be considered by the government but not be binding on the government

- Council may organise national, global conferences, seminars and symposia for promoting sports and games in the nation

- Council will be headed by President in the rank of Minister of State and will include four MPs, sports personalities, coaches, sports experts, sports administrators and reps from different sports bodies, corporate bodies and NGOs

- Council will meet and deliberate on matters pertaining to the promotion and development of athletics and sports in India

- The Council will popularise sports among the youth as a way of living

- The Council also stressed on increasing the outreach of sports to rural as well as tribal, LWE areas and NE as well as J&K

- The Council will also engage in policy implementation for generating interest for sports and games in the nation

- The Council is also involved in the promotion of inclusiveness in sports with a focus on differently abled, those with special needs and more

- The Council also aims to prevent drug abuse in sports and prevent age frauds as well as sexual harassment of sports players

- The Council focuses on enhancing professionalism, transparency and good governance for the effective operation of National Sports Federations

- It will also look for ways and means to raise resources for promotion of sports and games in the nation apart from promoting sports sciences and sports medicine

- Sports Council will also ensure effective utilisation of sports infrastructure and its proper augmentation

- It also stresses matters pertaining to participation as well as performance of sportspeople and teams in global sporting events

- The Council will also advise on matters arising out of match fixing and other irregular practices in competitive games and sports

- The Council will also promote early spotting of sports talent and nurturance of identified talent

- It will stress on integration of sports in the curriculum of schools, colleges and varsities as well as higher educational institutions

- Welfare measures for sports persons will also be suggested by the Council and it will deliberate on issues and matters pertaining to youth affairs and sports

- President and members of the Council other than ex officio members will be appointed by the GoI

- Council will meet at least once in a quarter

- It will be solely concerned with the promotion of sports and games in the nation
