An Inspiring 30 Storey Legend: UN Motivates With illUmiNations

In a run up to the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon led Climate Summit on the 23rd of September, the UN lit its iconic headquarters complex with an amazing 30 storey architectural projection which has encouraged and motiavted global citizens to take action against climate change.

The momentum for the climate change movement is especially important because people need to stand up for what is right. The 30 storey projection was christened “illUmiNations: Protecting Our Planet” and it was organised by the UN in partnership with the Oceanic Preservation Society/OPS and Obscura Digital.

The projections went live on the western facade of the UNGA (UN General Assembly) building made of white marble. The projections were on display from 7:30 in the evening to 11 pm in the night on 20th September, just 3 days prior to the climate summit.

The display provided a reminder of just what we have at stake: the earth with all its natural beauty, biodiversity and a home that is second to none. It is our hope for survival and the UN hopes to empower and educate people to combat climate change. Leaders from member states as well as finance, corporate secctor, civil society and public sector will gather at the UN on 23rd of September to discuss the future of climate change action for combating the evil that threatens our earth.

The Climate Summit held by the secretary-general aims to work towards reducing GHG emissions, increasing the resilience of earth to combat climate change and aim for political action to combat the menace by 2015. These are inspiring ambitions and one hopes that those present as well as those who are serious about combating climate change take heed of the proceedings here.

"We must make our voices heard. These exceptional projections being shown at the United Nations will help draw attention to the need to make climate action a reality in every community and every society," Ban stressed at a press release on the event organised in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information.

With massive mobilisation such as nearly 2,000 events across 150 countries being held to call for action in combating climate change, groups such as Avaaz and Friends of the Earth are also participating in the event. Multifatih initiatives for combating climate such such as ourvoices.net to “bring faith to the climate talks”. The final say is from Ban himself who joins many marchers in the upcoming events in support of those who believe in “action, not words”. Voices can speak in support, but the action is the critical part. Even the Dalai Lama has spoken of how actions are more important than prayers in the context of the problems the world is facing right now. Without action, the earth is doomed to perish. People from all over the world speak of this and campaign for it. Hopefully, the world leaders will heed the voices this time.
