Are Naxals the biggest internal threat to India's security?

India has got one of the fastest rates of growth across developing countries in the world. It is one the most populous democratic nations that has got the resources and potential to become a superpower. However, there are many key challenges in the existing globalised environment. One of such challenges faced by India since last so many years is the threat of Naxalites. In a recent report, prepared by IEP Research, India is ranked 143 among 162 countries on peace index. Also, it is on number four position in the Global Terrorism Index. What are the reasons behind such a poor performance of India on security parameter? Are Naxals the biggest internal threat to India's security?

Yes

• The Naxalites highlight the nation’s interior weakness and revealing of interior weakness is an open invitation to the external threats.

• The Naxalites are hampering economic reforms by creating problems in developing the regions where they rule. Also, the resources that should be used for nation’s overall development is spent on internal security so as to control the Naxalite activities.

• Naxalites highlight several underlying weaknesses of India’s political structure, governance and socio-economic structure.

• The Naxalites control over 40% of India’s geographical area and are concentrated in remote and densely forested areas known as “Red Corridor.” Leave alone wiping them off; Indian security system cannot even locate them in these remote areas.

• The conflicts between the military and the guerillas are the biggest threat to the citizens and their properties.

No

• Terrorism is a much bigger issue than the Naxalites as terrorism has got no religion and results in huge loss of lives and properties in one single incident.

• Corruption and criminalization in Indian politics is a major threat because if the system is not clean, no threat whether internal or external can be faced.

• India’s diverse population is the biggest threat as the imbalance between demand and supply of resources is increasing day by day.

• The emergence of ethnic conflicts like it happened in event of Telangana will have a drastic effect on India in coming time.

• Policy paralysis and instability resulting out of political terror is hampering India’s growth in various sectors. India scores 4 out of 5 on the Political Terror Scale. Rank 5 represents highest level of suppression.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that Naxalites problem is one of the major threats to India’s internal security. It has got multi-dimensional adverse impact on nation. Moreover, failure to stop the internal threat is an open invitation to external threats. However, the main culprit behind the Naxalite problem is poor governance. Until and unless, the political mess is not cleared, the problems of Naxalites can never be solved. Therefore, the real threat is not the Naxalites but the real threats are the political parties and the system which has failed to contain the problem in so many years.

  • hi kartik..
naxlas are forced do do that??.. i mean oh what can i do.. i don't get things in life so i had to kill a truck load of people... y cant people sympathies with me.. its all medias fault that they only highlight my crimes??... seriously??

they believe that there should not be any economic difference between people.. well that's impossible because if it were possible we would have seen at least one such example in nature. there is not a single working system composed of either living or non living things, all social animals 'need' hierarchy and social difference to create and sustain a civilization... wanting no mystery or pain or poverty is awesome and by the way i would really like a unicorn and ride it across a rainbow

  • hii deepa this is kartik m agree with you but I would like to clarify ur views I do agree with u there are plenty of other issues or crimes those are related to internal security of our nation.
I belive naxals are also humans they results in bomb blasting n many several crimes what we do we always say naxalists had done this or that but hv we ever thought what is the reason behind doing all these criminal activities coz naxals are forced do that. we all got every benefit of this modern world but naxalists they are lack of these resources no electricity no water no food no education no govt scheme is implemented to them nothing they got from our government.
they are also humans like us who need every basic facility to live a better life styles but our govt is just wasting money on useless activities the cities like Gujrat or Delhi n many other states they are already developed but govt is still investing money on them to make them smart city. that is of no use states like bihar, Uttrakhand where the roads are not yet built they had no education no food who force them to be a naxals.
I belive the govt should think about it rather than investing money on activities which are already in good condition they should make all states equal first and it can result in solving the problem soon

  • The naxals are definitely a threat to the internal security of the country. But when we talk of the biggest threat, we have plenty of other issues in our country which has to be rectified a lot prior to the naxal issue. It is understandable that the threat to the internal security would create agitations throughout the country.

Before discussing the naxals, we need to check out the root cause of making them so much powerful. It is nothing but a weak governance. The political stability in India is questionable for a long time now. We have been under the trap of hung parliament so far. We don’t have a single candidate from our country who is ready to bear the burden of rectifying and mending the trenches in our country. The politicians who file-in for the elections don’t have a good repute to earn public support in full. Under such circumstances, the anti-governance issue definitely get a spark to set-up fire.

Majority of the concerns in the country can be corrected if we can have a good leader to take-up the responsibilities and handle them efficiently. Naxalism is an issue that needs to be handled diplomatically. It is not the physical strength and power that always finds the victory. The wisdom and intellect should be well blended with power and authority to handle the naxals. The internal threat paving way to the external factors for terrorism and related issue are the secondary factors of naxalism. But what we need right now is an efficient leader who concentrates on social responsibilities genuinely over his self- portrayal and importance.

We have initiated the first step towards the political stability with the formation of the government with full public support. Let us look forward for a well-knitted approach by the government and the officials in-charge to hook-up the naxals issue. Thus, it is the definitely the lurching governance giving political instability which is the biggest threat to the country, much prior to the naxalism.
