- Introduction
Chemical engineering is one of the discipline of engineering, apt for those candidates who have an aptitude and the dedication to work with chemicals. This field of engineering involves designing, development and maintanance of chemical plants and processes. It covers the area of biotechnology and nanotechnology which deals with the mineral processing. It is one of the growing field which involves conversion of raw materials into some useful products. It is a combination of chemistry with technology and principles of engineering to achieve new products. Chemical Engineering has replaced various products with chemically engineered products because they are cheaper, more convenient and easy to produce though many chemically engineered products have been critisied for being harmful to environment. Despite this the importance and benefits of chemical engineering cannot be ignored.
Performance and growth of industry in India
The performance of chemical engineers is very good with further scope to grow due to industrial expansion. The industry in today’s date accounts for 13% of GDP (Gross Domestic product). At this rate the total export of the country growing at the rate of 10% to 12%. Different sectors has shown growth such as Inorganic Chemicals which contributes around 9% in the GDP. Drugs and Pharmaceuticals holds the 4th place in the world in terms of volume.
Options and Opportunities
Chemical Engineers get the best opportunities with Pharmaceutical companies. Other than that they can work in Government departments like Water treatment, Waste Management etc. They can also work in the various industries using Chemical Engineering methods to obtain the products. Other than production chemical engineers can also work in research departments. Since the availability of natural products is decreasing the need for Chemically synthesised products has increased which has resulted in rapid research in this field. Chemical Engineering is quite a well paid profession. Remunerations offered are good and depend highly on the kind of industry one is working in and the nature of work.
