The overall economic health of a nation depends on advanced commerce studies.

There are number of career possibilities that commerce as a stream gives you. Due to globalization many MNCs have led to several job opportunities in insurance and banking sector. The scope in commerce has increased many folds in the past few decades. Except engineering, medicine and science related fields you are open to options like Chartered Accountancy (most sought after job ever), Company secretary, Banking, economics, Government jobs etc.

There are subjects in commerce like Business law, Financial Counting, Business finance, auditing, Taxation whose concepts come handy in dealing with day to day tasks at work. Students have options of taking up commerce with or without maths so even if mathematics isn’t your cup of tea, commerce can be the field for you.

Commerce students after passing 12th are eligible for appearing in examinations conducted by governmental organisation like IBPS, SSC etc. for clerical posts in banks, defence services and other government offices. You will need to clear the entrance examination followed by the Interview to get these jobs. However, it is always beneficiary to pursue a graduation course before you start applying for these posts or you can also pursue a correspondence programme and work side by side.

Students after 10+2 can also take up careers in professional fields such as Company Secretary, Actuarial Science, ICAI, and Chartered Accountancy and so on. You can do these courses along with the degree courses so by the end of the course you are a graduate with a professional qualification. For e.g. a lot of students pursue B.Com in computer science before CA.

Another option is that you can do a bachelors programme in commerce (B.Com) followed by M.Com, PHD or M.Phil. There are attractive job opportunities for B.Com graduates in financial sector such as financial analyst, fraud analyst, Finance Manager and chartered financial analyst. In banking sector also many national and international banks provide good job opportunities. There’s also a demand for accountants (e.g. costs and work accountants) both in government and non-governmental organisations, so this is also an area of employment that this field offers.

If you choose investments as your field then you can become an equity research analyst, investment banker, mutual fund executive, financial planner, asset manager, venture capitalist, market manager or real estate advisor. The Insurance industry has also shown a lot of boom in the past few years due to the liberalization policy in India. Many life and non-life insurance companies provide job opportunities to commerce graduates as a risk analyst and also in actuary management.

Other job prospects include Management jobs e.g. assistant manager, manger, senior manager that require an B.Com\BBA followed by MBA. Apart from this you can work in KPOs and BPOs which are present in abundance in India.

In addition to this, you can look for job options in marketing or work as book keeper, market analyst, CFO, stock broker, internet marketing executive (E-Commerce), auditor or you be self-employed and work as trade consultant, management consultant, corporate lawyer, free-lance financial advisor\analyst, tax consultant also you can open your own firm and become an entrepreneur.
