Career prospects in Climatology and courses to take up
What is the scope for a career in Climatology in India? I am currently in 10+2 science with physics chemistry and mathematics. I understand that climatology is a post-graduation program in India. Do I have to study PCM at the graduation level too in order to go for this program later? Please advice on the initial steps towards becoming a climatologist.
There is a bright future for the aspirants of climatology in India. Predicting weather and studying the environmental effects of weather is a part of a climatologist’s job and this work is required in many industries across India, hence, job prospect if good. These are the various fields that you can look forward to as a climatologist:
• Daily weather forecasting.
• Weather forecast officer in airlines.
• Indian Meteorological department.
• Atmospheric research
• Broadcasting in news
• Architectural Climatologist
• Indian Council of Agricultural Research
• Indian Space Research Centre.
• National Remote Sensing Agency.
• Department of science and Technology.
• Space Application Centre.
Regarding PCM at graduation level, you have a two-fold path that you can choose to follow. Yes, a good mathematical instinct is required in this career and hence you will have to keep mathematics at the graduation level and that too as a major subject so that it remains on the strong side, leaving aside Physics and Chemistry if you wish. Alternatively, you can do a graduation in Geology. At the post-graduation level, both these paths can take you to a specialization in climatology. I hope that solves your query.
