Career prospects in Psychology and available post graduate programmes

I am thinking of pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I have done my 12th in science stream with an average of 76% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. What are the career options after BA in Psychology and what other advance studies need to be done after a bachelor’s degree in this subject? Is there good scope for Psychologists in India and abroad?

Demand for psychological services have considerably increased in schools, hospitals, social service agencies, mental health centers, substance abuse treatment clinics, consulting firms and private companies. It greatly depends upon the reputation of the institute from where you will be doing your bachelor’s so please look for a better college for your course. It is an advantage for you since you have been studying in stream at the high school level. Another advantage could be if you have studied computer science too in this level.

These are the career options for you depending on your specialization at the post graduation level:

• Career or Vocational Counselor

• School Psychologist

• Counselor

• Genetics Counselor

• Forensic Psychologist

• Engineering Psychologist

• Clinical Psychologist

• Sports Psychologist

• Industrial-Organizational Psychologist

• Special Education Teacher

Psychologists with higher qualification and from reputed colleges are paid very well in India and abroad. After a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, you must definitely go for masters in psychology and/or a PG diploma in guidance and counselling. To make it further more advanced, you may do an MPhil. Those wanting to work with disabled children require a licence from Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) or an equivalent qualification in special education. To work in hospitals, you need an MPhil/ PhD from national-level or international recognised institutes. I wish you luck for your future!
