Courses and fee structure to become a Jewellery Designer.

I want to become a Jewellery designer, what all do I need to do?


As a jewellery designer, you are expected to design jewellery made out of different kinds of materials, in an innovative and cost-effective manner. You must already think of different ideas on how to create a piece of jewellery or a design which is new to the world. This approach will lead to brighter future prospects for you in this field.
Furthermore, choosing the right college or institute is also very important hence you must do a thorough research about various colleges\institutes and the courses offered by them. You must also know the value of courses that you’re opting for.

Lastly, because this field is related to art hence you should also create a portfolio to showcase your talent to the colleges and companies. A portfolio reflects your creativity and ideologies. It consists of self- made sketches, designs and models which can be anything.

I need to know what kinds of courses are offered by universities and institutes. And is there any eligibility criterion to do jewellery designing? And also suggest the average fee these courses charge.


There is both short term and long term course offered by colleges the country. There are different eligibility criteria’s depending on the type of courses you opt for, which are as follows

a) For Diploma, Degree and Certificate courses in Jewellery Designing one should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination from any stream of a recognised institute \board. On an average this course last for about 3-6 months depending upon the type of course and the institute.

b) Short term courses require completion of at least 10th grade. The duration of this course is about 1-2 months on an average.

c) Crash courses are offered to working professionals and students. Average duration about 9-weeks.
One of the best and the most renowned college to pursue a programme in jewellery design is National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) or National Institute of Design (NID). The duration of these courses is 4 years.

A full time degree course can cost you anywhere around Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 1.80 Lakh whereas a short term course can cost you around Rs. 15,000 to 65,000.
