What are the courses I can consider for making a career in jewellery designing? What does the job of a jewellery designer include and from where can I pursue the related courses?
Many programs and certificate courses are offered these days in the field of jewellery designing at reputed institutes across India. There are institutes offering long-term, short-term and even distance learning programs in jewellery designing. You will get to learn stone cutting, engraving and polishing and testing the quality of precious metals and gems along with some special skills like electroplating, metal colouring, anodising, enamelling and stone setting. You can choose to go for diploma courses after 10+2 or Bachelor in Designing (B.Des) from various institutes like NIFT. After a Bachelor’s degree or a Diploma, you can look for internship in a jewellery house and alongside pursue a master’s degree in jewellery designing.
You can work in jewellery designing house, export house, or fashion house. You can also choose to be self-employed and set up your own jewellery house. You can start as freelance designer and gain experience while studying. Your work will include preparing sketches either by hand or on the computer for a conceptualized depiction of the design. You will have to interact with the customer or the manufacturing team understanding their expectations from the design and accordingly design a structural model with computer simulations or a full-scale prototype. You will need to be exposed to Computer skills since they help you design with ease and renders flexibility in exploring various design alternatives and is the most popularly used designing mode for jewellery and other designers. You will have to work with a variety of raw materials from cheap to run and easily available stuff like paper, wood, terracotta, jute, to extremely precious Swarovski crystals. Your work will also depend upon the level at which you get placed. For entry-level jobs, you will gain experience in a number of work comprehensive of all the facets of designing jewellery.
