Cricket is not hot favorite of "New-gen" kids
Cricket is not hot favorite of “New-gen” kids
Traditionally, when people use to stay in joint families, children were also found of playing outdoor games. But now with nuclear families prevailing and with all the classes and tuitions, children do not get enough time to indulge into any outdoor activities and are confined to indoor activities like video games and x – boxes.
Initially, we just had one or two channels with limited shows being aired on those channels hence children as well as adults did not have the opportunity to explore many opportunities, but today with the aid of video games children are learning about new sports by playing them and also get interested in watching those sports on the television. Also now there are numerous channels which show sports and other shows as well from across the world giving us a wider exposure of various sports. Additionally, there are so many various series of cricket that has come into existence like IPL, T – 20, world cup and many more that cricket is almost being played for the full year and can be watched anytime.
But games like football, hockey, Formula 1, tennis, badminton championships come only once or twice a year and has created a charm amongst the students more than cricket. Cricket is more like a secondary option for them, just in case if any other sport is not telecasted then they might watch cricket. In cricket, match fixing has also become a common feature and hence it gives a feeling that the cricketers are playing just for money and hence the children loose interest as there is no sportsmen spirit or actual competition left amongst the teams. Also they keep hearing about the scandals that take place in cricket which puts them off the cricket and do not wish to watch it any more.
Even though cricket is one such game which is loved by maximum people, yet when children are in school and in their break- time they prefer playing football and find it more fun loving as well as interesting; and now with the opportunity of football being telecasted on television they also prefer watching it on the television. Also as I mentioned with X – boxes being installed in every home and it has the feature of virtual playing, there are thousands of games installed giving more and more opportunities for the children to pick and grab their interest on any one sport. The x – boxes do not have many options in cricket but a lot of other options as well to be played with a partner.
Hence with the new technology and new interests, children are not keen on watching cricket as much as other sports, along with the scandals that keep taking place keeps them off the guard from cricket.

- Every sport has its own importance. Cricket had remained on the top in regard to the popularity for a long period. That was the time when every child wants to be the cricketer. Every event has to face a downward slope after the peak, after which it retains the stagnant phase. This is the period of the downward surge for the cricket.
Kids have shifted their interest away from cricket and are focussing on other sports as well. Though, majority of them have a sedentary lifestyle, with lack of any sporting. It is the world of Internet which has changed the minds of the growing youth. Kids today prefer to sit inside and watch everything on their ‘idiot box’ rather than going outside and have some physical activity. A compulsory gym or sports membership has become a fashion.
Still kids go for the work-out, swimming, aerobics, badminton etc. more in comparison to the cricket. There is also another main reason behind this; cricket being a team sport, the kids today fail to have a good social and friend circle to play this game. Gone are the days when boys used to play gully-cricket.
Not with respect to cricket, but such a life pattern with total lack of physical activity amongst kids is more harmful for their health. It would have been better to see the kids still keeping the same passion for the cricket.
