Real Madrid wins record 10th Champions League title
Real Madrid has won the Champions League again. Having won for the tenth time due to timely goals from players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, the team beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 at Lisbon. Atletico was aiming for their first ever European win, but Real proved to be a worthy contender.
Forex reaches $314.92 billion
India's foreign exchange reserves rose by $1.09 billion to $ 314.92 billion for the week ending May 16, according to RBI. There was a sharp jump in overseas currency assets. According to the weekly data provided by the RBI, foreign currency assets which is the biggest component of forex reserves rose by $1.26 billion to $287.81 billion.
President Zuma elected for second 5 year term
The African national Congress won a victory at the general election held on May 7, 2014. President Zuma was officially elected for a second five year term by the parliament following this victory.
Deutsche Bank to not fund expansion of Adani Group coal port
Deutsche Bank will not provide funding support to one of the largest coal ports of Indian company Adani Group near the ecologically sensitive Great Barrier Reef. Green activists protested regarding the coal port near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, leading to Deustche Bank's decision. Australia had approved the coal port expansion at Abbot Point last year subject to environmental conditions.
Pope Francis calls for end to Syrian civil war during historic Middle East visit
Pope Francis emphasised the need for urgent steps to end the 3 year old Syrian civil war, as he arrived in Jordan yesterday. This is the first visit of Pope Francis to the Holy Land. The Pope also stressed on the need to find a just solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict in the Middle East.
Pakistan PM accepts invitation to attend inauguration for Indian PM
In the first visit of its kind, Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif has accepted the invitation to attend the oath taking ceremony of Indian PM designate Narendra Modi. The Pakistani premier's attendance is the first in the history of the two rival nations which have fought 3 wars so far.
China wins Uber Cup for 13th time
China has beaten Japan to win the Uber Cup this year. China won this badminton championship with a 3-1 win. Japanese players Misaki Matsumoto and Ayaka Takashahi offered stiff competition to world no.2 pair of Bao Yxin and Tang Jinhua.
