USA has nominated Sunil Sabarhwal as the alternate executive director of International Monetary Fund (IMF). He is an independent American investor in payments sector.

Nigeria to overtake S Africa as Africa’s biggest economy


Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producing nation is set to become the largest economy of the continent. Although countries carry this exercise every year as per the guidelines of UN, Nigeria will exercise GDP calculations after 1990. Nigeria’s economy is expected to increase by as much as 60 per cent, taking it from $264 billion past South Africa’s $384 billion.

T-20 World Cup final


Srilanka defeated India in the final to clinch the T-20 world cup trophy in the match held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Lasith Malinga was the captain of the winner team.

Sun Pharma to acquire Ranbaxy


Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd is to acquire 100 per cent of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd in an all-stock transaction and the combine revenues will total to a whooping amount of $4.2 billion. Ranbaxy shareholders will receive 0.8 shares in Sun Pharma for each Ranbaxy share. In January, the US Food and Drug Administration banned imports from a Ranbaxy unit in India due to quality control violations.

Committee for Andhra Pradesh


The union govt. has constituted a 5 member committee to recommend the successor capital for Andhra Pradesh under the chairmanship of K. Shivaramakrishnan. Hyderabad, which will be the capital of Telangana, will be the joint capital of the two states for ten years and within that period the residuary Andhra Pradesh state will have to build a new capital.

IRNSS -1B launched


The ISRO launched country’s second navigational satellite IRNSS-1B into the earth orbit. It was launched from PSLV-C24 rocket from Satish Dhawan Space centre, Shri Harikota in Andhra Pradesh. IRNSS-1B stands for Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System -1B. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) comprises of seven satellites. Once completed, the IRNSS system will offer navigational services, for both civilian and defense purposes, in India and also 1,500 km beyond its borders.

President of Malta


Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca has become the 9th president of Malta and 2nd women president of the country. She succeeds George Abela for the next 5 years.

The European Union launched Sentinel-1A


The EU launched Sentinel-1A, the first satellite of it Copernicus Earth observation project from French Guiana. It is meant to monitor Earth for climate change and environmental damage and help disaster relief operations.
