Srilanka wins Asia Cup Finals, 2014
Srilanka won the Asia Cup 2014 defeating Pakistan in the final match which was held in Mirpur, Bangladesh. India was earlier ousted in the quarter finals of the tournament after being defeated by Pakistan. Bangladesh, India, Srilanka, Pakistan and debutant team Afghanistan participated in the tournament.
Pankaj Mishra, selected for Windham Cambell Literature Prize, 2014
Award-winning Indian essayist and novelist Pankaj Mishra has been selected for the prestigious Windham Cambell Literature prize in the non-fiction category. The 2014 prize winners are: in fiction, Aminatta Forna (Sierra Leone), Nadeem Aslam (Pakistan), and Jim Crace (United Kingdom); in non-fiction, Pankaj Mishra (India) and John Vaillant (United States/Canada); and in drama, Kia Corthron (United States), Sam Holcroft (United Kingdom) and Noe Janaczewska (Australia).
Seed festival in Delhi
Delhi is hosting a unique seed festival with farmers from 17 states participating with 2300 seed varieties. In this national seeds festival, farmers have got an opportunity to display seed varieties conserved by them.
Malaysian aircraft missing
A Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 239 people, including five Indians, was reported to have disappeared over the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam, the plane was a Boeing 777-200. Malaysia deployed maritime vessels and helicopters, the Philippines put three air force planes and three ships into service and China placed on alert two maritime vessels for deployment.
Santosh trophy, 2014
Mizoram defeated Railways in the final match of 68th National football championship to win the Santosh trophy. This is the first time that Mizoram has won the coveted title.
International women’s day celebrated
International women’s day was celebrated across the world on 8th March. The UN theme for international women day 2014 was “Equality for women is progress for all” which emphasizes on gender equality and women empowerment.
Committee set-up by RBI for BASEL-3 norms
RBI announced to set up a committee under the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) to set up the guidelines for banking sector to comply with the Basel norms. Under the Basel norms, the banks are untitled to maintain a certain amount of capital against its credit or risk.
