Development vs Environment

Development or Environment - Which is more important?

The Indian economy has grown at a tremendous pace over the last two decades. The 1991 reforms led to transformation of the Indian economy leading to growth accompanied by fast paced construction. There has also been large scale migration of rural population to cities leading to newer settlements. While it is only natural that the change has helped the rising population in improving their quality of life, it has led to compromise in the natural habitat of animals as they have been displaced from many a places where high rise buildings have come up.

Even though development and growth have always been vital to people, dramatic changes in the climate as well as its impact on the environment have made a sea change in the perception of development in the recent years.

Activists as well as environmentalists have started actively supporting a number of cases which involve either residential construction or a new plant built by reputed industrial house that would lead to displacement of native population as well as destruction of flora and fauna.

The former environment Minister Jairam Ramesh brought the focus back on environment at a time when the country was largely delving into fulfilling the mineral needs of the country. A great need was felt to ensure that as much as development was essential, environment could not be ignored and in fact, it had to be taken into consideration for holistic growth of the country. Also, there have been active discussions on replacing the Gross Domestic Product with Green GDP.

Cities such as Gurgaon, Bangalore, Pune amongst others have witnessed stupendous development activity over the last few years. With large multinationals setting up offices in them, large number of people have moved into them leading to fast erosion of green cover for development activity. Not only the government, even citizens in the cities are now trying to conserve environment through various ways in these cities.

The catastrophic consequences of environment degradation for achieving growth rapidly have been largely visible as the number of floods as well as torrential rains has only increased.

Environmental balance has been one of the primary reasons why sustainability has been maintained for thousands of years. If development is achieved at the cost of spoiling environment, then development loses its sheen. The second fastest growing country in the world will need to ensure that its environment security is not compromised while its growth story remains intact.

Economic Development vs. environment protection is one of the major dilemmas in today’s world. On one hand people are concerned about the environment in which they live, which is degrading by the day. Major issues like global warming, greenhouse effect, air and water pollution are increasing each day. While on the other hand, to eradicate poverty and increase growth in the economy, development is mandatory. Without economic development a nation cannot come out of the vicious circle of poverty and cannot provide their residents a guarantee of survival.

Both are equally important in their respective spheres. But when it comes to choosing one over the other it is undoubtedly obvious that environment protection is of more concern than the development of an economy. We have already wasted a lot of natural resources in the development process, which is showing its results now in the form of global warming, deforestation, green house effects and many more. And now we need to save our resources for our future generations so that they can live in a healthy environment.

    Poverty and environmental damage connection

We have put our earth on risk many a times because of human activities. In the process of development we have failed to put out attention on the fact that ultimately poverty and environmental damage are inter linked. The results of destroying rain forests ultimately lead to the removal of shelters for the native people. They are only left with slums to reside in. Polluted water leads to failure of crops and food. The result of climatic change is the turning of fertile lands into deserts and flooded coastal areas where a huge population of the country lives.

    Pollution defects

One major result of economic development is the creation of pollution. And pollution has its very own adverse impacts. Rather, countries lose from pollution more than they do from industrialization. A perfect example of this scenario is China. The unchecked development of the economy for 20 years has led to chronic levels of water and air pollution. This pollution has harmed hundreds of lives by spreading harmful diseases through health problems and has also caused major losses to farmers for their failed crops. This uncontrolled development is an example proving that a healthy environment is more important than economic development.

The intensive development results in climatic changes which affects the whole planet and not just the developing nations. It is likely to have more adverse impacts on the developing economies as sea levels will rise, deserts will advance, and natural disasters will become more common.

    Sustainable development

There is no hindrance and stopping of economic growth and development which can give a million lives a better standard of living. What needs to be focused and stressed upon is sustainable development. This form of development links environmental care and social justice along with economic growth. Here the development is planned and carried in such a way that it uses as less natural resources as possible and also saves a considerable amount for our future generations. With this sustainable development, the economic growth of the world is also not restricted and the environment is also taken care of.
