Difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced. What are the admission process of NIT’s and IIT’s?
What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced? Also please shed some light on the admission process of NIT’s and IIT’s.
There is a very slight difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE (Main) will have 2 papers; candidates may opt for either paper 1 or 2 depending upon their choice of course they want to pursue. Basically, Paper 1 is the one that a candidate should take if aspiring for admission to the undergraduate courses offered by IIT’s. JEE Main exam will consist of multiple choice questions i.e. objective type paper, it will also test comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning whereas JEE Advance will test problem-solving ability in basic science subjects. These 2 tests combined together will judge a student’s scholastic level and aptitude for science and engineering.
There is a very discrete process for admission in IITs as the number of seats are very limited. Thus, IITs will pick up the top 25% of the students who have scored above the cut-off and have the highest percentile as per XII class marks and JEE Main, for a special JEE-Advanced. In the early stage, an aggregate score is calculated with 50% weightage to class XII Board and the remaining 50% weightage to JEE Mains performance. After the aggregate scores of the top 25% candidates are calculated, a fixed number of candidates are considered eligible for admission. The short-listed candidates are ranked in order of merit based purely on their performance in the JEE examination.
The admission process for all other CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions), like NITs, IIITs, etc. is fairly easy as compared to that of IIT. There are less hassles too as it is based on the scores in the JEE exam. The merit list is prepared based on 40% weightage to school boards marks in XII class and 60% weightage to JEE (Main). The weightage to school Board examination marks are considered only after normalisation.
