Disabled people need sensitivity of the society
Disabled people need sensitivity of the society
Rather than charities, disabled people need sensitivity of the society and initiatives to make their life easy. For e.g. those on wheel chairs require a wheel chair friendly construction at a building rather than charity.
How much do you agree with this? Provide reasons behind your stand.
I completely agree that disabled people need sensitivity of the society, more than the charity. But it is a very sad state of affairs that even today people are not as sensitive and affectionate towards the disabled. Also, the amount of charity which is done is so meagre that it hardly makes a difference to their lives. To worsen the picture, some superstitious people feel that a person is disabled due to some wrong deeds in the past life and hence, they deserve to live like this.
Also, it has been noted that even various organizations that have been created to help these disabled people operate more like service providers, entrapping the funding opportunities more than serving their original purpose of representing disabled people and having a humanitarian approach towards them.
One should realise that disability is not an independent individual issue but it is a societal issue. It is heartening to see that there are various activist movements in India which operate for the disabled. But instead of raising funds and charities, they should try and change the mid set of people towards them. When people would start feeling for them, they would automatically start contributing in whatever way they can.
Indirectly, we learn so many virtues from disabled people like patience, courage, positive thinking etc .Hence; this gives us all the more reasons to have a developmental approach towards them. With so many technological breakthroughs happening all over the world, the Governments should spend in Research and development and innovations which would make the life of disabled people happier and easier.
For example, the invention of artificial limbs caused a revolution. But it is also important that they should be priced competitively and should be easily available so that most disabled people can reap benefits from them.
Also, educating them and giving them jobs based upon their physical condition will make them feel a “sense of achievement” and increase their happiness quotient.
Also, disabled people should be trained by specialists in their fields so that they can try and overcome their shortcomings to the maximum extent possible and lead a life which is satisfactory and happy.

- It is a shame to witness that even in a modern society like ours many social attitudes reflect views that disabled people are defective and deviant. Many people still treat disabled people as objects of fear and pity. And this prevailing attitude of the society needs to be eradicated. People have to understand the fact disabled people need society’s sensitivity and support. With care and motivation from the society the disabled category can overcome many hardships and lead a more comfortable life. Charity is no doubt a great help for institutions who take care of these disabled people but charity is not enough to lead a prosperous and content life. One should learn the positiveness of life from disabled individuals. Such people reflect patience, positive attitude, perseverance, faith and hope. Only when the general attitude of the society will change toward disables people and they start connecting with them, will the level of charity also increase which will help them live a comfortable life. Government should also take initiatives to start various programs in favor of disabled people so that they are encouraged and accepted by the society.
