It is fine if you do not know anyone who works for the company. However, if you know someone, it will be good to give out the name.
- This shows them about your level of interest as it is human nature that if you know someone who works there you will ask them for information about the company or the role
- Secondly, they could ask that person for your reference

- You might know someone and you might not know anyone, the bottom line is to be honest. Check the company's policies to see if they have objections appointing family members or spouse of current employees. If you do know someone who works with them, do tell them, adding how well they have spoken about the company to you and motivated you to apply there. This might get you a referral which most companies prefer. In case you have someone from the family working in the same company, do mention that you are capable to keeping personal life separate from professional life.
"I happen to know XYZ from your ABC department since the last 5 years. We have been to the same college. She has always spoken so high of your company that it motivated me to apply here."
"XYZ, my brother is in the ABC department here. I have been hearing how pleasant it has been for him working here. However, my decision to work here is solely my choice depending on my aptitude and what I want to do in life. I can assure you that I am capable of keeping personal and professional life separate."
