Does Independence Day mean just a public holiday to you?

August 15, 1947 is memorable day for every Indian, as it is the day, when India won the independence from the stranglehold of British. The suppressed Indian Flag received its due respect and the sacrifices of many people got the meaning. From there on, India has moved steady and firm on the development path. It made a number of advancements in many fields. However, with passing time, the day that marked the beginning of all success, has lost its meaning. Let us see what everyone has to say on: Does Independence Day mean just a public holiday to you?

Yes

• For me Independence is to be celebrated every day, the freedom which comes in many terms and have to be fought daily. So, Independence Day is just a holiday for me.

• We are still slaves, slaves to money, slaves to communism, slaves to religious beliefs and slaves of desires. And, therefore, what else can Independence Day mean to me?

• Housewives get a day off from getting up early and preparing lunch boxes for their husband and students. So, its just holiday for them.

• It is a much needed public holiday for stock traders as they get relief from the stress of trading for an additional day in a year.

• In the busy world, where it is hard to earn a living, every day when there is no official work is just meant for rest and relax, and nothing else.

No

• As and when time passes, people realize that Independence Day is not about a holiday, sweets or history, but rather it is about celebrating the importance of being born in an independent country.

• Apart from public holiday, it is a day to sing National Anthem, to hoist the flag and to have some sweets in form of celebration.

• In the historic event Independence Day commemorates: the moment when we got free from the shackles of British slavery, and the message needs to be spread to the coming generation.

• Apart from a public holiday, Independence Day is dry day for me and many other people who cannot consume alcohol on that day.

• The honor for the undying efforts of patriots and love for our nation has been fading. In the busy schedules, the feeling of pride is revived on Independence Day.

Conclusion

When I analyze the perception of Independence Day in people’s mind, I realize this is what most of the people think of it is- A much needed National Holiday in August. But are they really wrong on their part? They cannot feel the value of something they are not deprived of. They cannot understand the significance of Independence Day because they have never known how it feels to be slave. However, they should understand that they are lucky enough to be born in a free nation. If they cannot commemorate the day, at least they can do something constructive to make it special for others.

  • Independence Day should be more than a mere public holiday for every true Indian by heart. It is the natural human tendency that the time heals and fades all the deep impressions on their heart and mind. Similarly, Independence Day’s zeal and enthusiasm is also fading away from the majority of the Indian souls.

Still, are forgetting the families of the great warriors who had fought the Independence struggle. And we have not passed enough years post-Independence to lose all those freedom fighters. There still might be some good old and bold souls living in some part of our country who had faced the era of slavery under the Britishers and have fought the struggle for a respectable living. We need to ask each one of them as to what does this day mean to them. The Independence day for them is a great victory, more than a noble prize, or for that matter, it is more than any precious living or non-living matter existing in this world. And their emotions and feelings do require appropriate respect.

What we are actually doing in the present era is just having loose debates on ground-less issues just to fade the image of this precious day. We should have ideally recognised those freedom fighters and given them recognition enough, so that generations passing by could recognize them by their name and face anytime. But, we have failed even to provide them a good living.

It is not the mistake of the children if they fail to understand the importance of this day, as the adults need to groom their own intellect and mind to recognize the importance of this day. Making it a dry day doesn’t make the addicts unable to consume alcohol, they do fulfil their craving by some or the other means. A true dry day would be the one, when people themselves realize and quit their addiction.

It is true that we are still slaves to the worldly joys and pleasures, but it is another struggle that we need to fight and win over. It doesn’t make sense to give these reasons just to justify for not giving importance to our national day. This day should be celebrated with feeling of respect, thanking and paying homage to all those king souls who have made us breathe in an Independent atmosphere without the sting of slavery. Hence, Independence Day is definitely more than a public holiday.
