English should continue to be the official language of India.

English should continue to be the official language of India.

English is used as the official language in India. Recently, when PM Modi used Hindi for its diplomatic talks, it surged agitation in non-Hindi states especially Tamil Nadu. Also, the recent NDA government’s proposal of giving importance to Hindi language on social media accounts faced stiff opposition by the Tamil Nadu CM and other regional parties. It is considered as violating the Official Languages Act, 1963” In the country where most of the people understand Hindi, is it Ok to continue with English as the official language of the country?

Yes

• English is one such language that is understood by people from different castes and states, and therefore deserves to be the official language of India.

• If any other language is tried to make the official language, all the regional parties will start the battle of making the state level as official language of India.

• If Hindi is given priority then it will create differences among the people who don’t speak it making them feel as second class citizens.

• Region C forms an important part of India that got agitated when PM Modi used Hindi for its diplomatic talks.

• The use of English language is as per the requirement of being a part of globalization and there is nothing wrong in it.

No

• Forget about all the different castes and religions as Indians have their own national language that is Hindi, and that should only be the official language of India.

• It is the duty of the government to take the measures so that people all over in India can read, write and speak in Hindi.

• Already Indian has adopted the western culture in many ways. If it continues there will be no personal or rather say national identity of India.

• In this case, India should learn something from Pakistan who made the Urdu as their official language after the division of country.

• The small little steps are the ways that will make sure that the people from different religion have at least something in common as Indians.

• English might be used as the official language of India but is the unofficial lingua franca in South Asia. When it is not official for the region, why make it official for the country.

Conclusion

English should not be the official language of India. It is an internal matter of country, and the central government should seriously consider changing the present scenario. Hindi represents India, and when the people in India don’t understand Hindi, it is a matter of shame for country. Why the regional parties wants to make the regional language as official language when Hindi represents India. The different regions are part of India. So, they should have proficiency in Hindi. However, till the time, these regions don’t understand Hindi; government has no option but to have English as the official language of India.

  • Yes, not because English is fundamentally desirable, but simply because it is practical for international AND international exchange of all kinds and is a relatively simple language for beginners to learn. In addition, the foundation for English as a common language has been laid reasonably well in most countries and, until technology evolves enough to provide rapid and accurate real-time translations of content, we shouldn't trouble ourselves with reinventing the wheel -- it will really slow us, and the entire planet, down.
The "colonial" excuse is of no use -- the imperialism of the past is in the past and cannot be undone. We can, however, use the few unintentional benefits that came with it--and English + some social ideas--that came with it to our advantage.

  • Before trying to impose a language (eg. hindi) on someone , first of all hindi speakers should think how it will be to have somebody else to impose their language(eg. any southern language) on them. Then you will be able to understand how it feels like when you cant even speak your own language( which is deeply rooted to your culture) , and lose your identity, in this so called secular country.

  • It is true that the south Indians will suffer if Hindi is made the national language, but when it is done, the people will start taking Hindi seriously and try to learn it. After a few decades, all Indians will know Hindi and it is a matter of pride for India.
    Lastly, let me qoute,
    "NO PAIN, NO GAINS"

  • what has been written in favor of English being the official language, that is entirely correct, but what the editor has failed to notice that the 'against' part has been written in an absolute lackadaisical way. Just because North India is devoted to Hindi being their mother language and wanting it to be recognized as the official language doesn't mean its in any way ethical. Andhra Pradesh was formed solely on the basis of linguistic disparity, and yet how can you expect people who consider their language the most important to their culture to leave it, its honor, and its history, and take a language foreign to their tongue as theirs? Not only its oppressive to even consider someone to take any other culture's language and force them to speak, and study in it. yes the British did the same, yet it has been more than a century since English was introduced in Indian education system. If you cannot consider taking any other language foreign to yours as the official language of your state or country, you should ot in any case expect it to be done by any other community as well. The decision of making Hindi , or any other Indian language official would be a disaster, not only political, but economical, civil and religious as well. There would nothing be short of a fierce and chaotic civil war if such hideous decision is to be taken. The editor needs to bring out stronger points in the 'against' section of the (pseudo) discussion.

  • Don't you have any shame to write such baqwas?

Why should Indians have a useless language imposed on them? I want my future generations to excel in science and mathematics and have global opportunities. The English language provides that. All the modern scientific advancements, the vast majority were in the English language. I want my generations to speak this great language fluently. We are a failed, stubborn race of people. We never learn from our mistakes. We are overpopulated and half our population use the river as a toilet. This is the very definition of a failed state. We shouldn't blame others, our mentality is pagal. We should become international and forward-thinking not remain losers. You lot stick with your bloody Hindi, but don't impose this backward language on me. I want English for India.

  • From ancient India and till now,In India The maximum talkative language in northwest regime is Hindi. But still it is not a mother language and official one.But when it comes to English ,it has already started to expand it root's in every region. So,In my opinion ,It must be declared as an official language.

  • I don't think dt english should be an official language like hindi in india

What is language? Language is a way to express your thoughts, comments to another ppl who is nearer to you .

As all of we know hindi is our national kanguage, but in India millions of ppl dont no to read, speak even write in hindi.it is really shameful to being a part of india in where hindi has been choosen national language.

Yeah english is also an important language as we use it sonetimes as far as we need it too closely

I think Government should b given pressure to learn d hindi from lowest level of learning. SO THAT everyone will focus in Hindi like their mother tongue.in the other side we sud also learn English properly just for needed

  • hello everyone before going into the original topic i want to visualize that language is the medium used to communicate with others. the people who are dumb also have their own way of communicating. so the main theme of language is to communicate that is to express our feelings. now coming to the point of english as the official language it should be continued. there are lot of instances for this statement:
1)the national exams like CA, Bank exams AIEE or any other entrance tests can be written from any part of the country. for example i originally belong to andhra pradesh but due to some reasons i used to stay in delhi and i am persuing my bank exams from there so if only the regional language is used then how could i crack the exams. so it is important to conduct the exams in english along with regional language.
2)secondly, our political system keeps dealings with other parts of the world. we all know that our financial status mostly depends on the stock market which connects with the entire world in that case there is need to have english as an official language.
i conclude that respecting and giving important to our regional language is necessary. continuing english as an official language doesn't mean that we are discouraging our regional language we are just using it as a medium for communicating.

  • English should be made as an official language of India but it should be at the professional level only, since this will help the country to build relation with foreign countries but being the part of India every Indian should understand Hindi.

  • Hello Friends,

I think we will first discuss some facts and then in the last i will tell what i consider.
    1) 41% of people understand Hindi. the second best is 8.1 for Bengali.
    2) By English as an official languages, we have made the general public dependent on others for filling the government forms to others. All the notices that are there from the government would be published in English means the 40-50 % people will not be able to even read it.
3)When English was made official Language in 1947 more 80% of the people didn't know English. I think this point will take care of the people who think "i think english should continue to be the national language until and unless all people of the country learn, speak , and able to write in hindi."
    4) Hindi & Sanskrit are the only language in the world which is spoken as it is written on paper.
    5) As a Hindustani we should stand and ask our leaders to make Hindi the official language.
    6) See Chinese they made mandarin as there official language inspite of having more 30+ native languages, because there supreme leaders respected there heritage and kept it as it is, Not like us who has made our mother tongue as if it is backward.
    7) In South as they learn English as other language, they can also learn Hindi as other language too. Only some strong efforts are required.

One of my friend is of a view that "if foreigner (NRI) visits to website its really difficult because some Hindi letters really very difficult" : So, have we complained for last 50 years that English is difficult change this, and if we speak of those foreigners google translate is there for the websites.

English is a common language not because it is mostly spoken but because it is copy from all the other languages of the world. How can we advocate a language which in itself is an absurd collections of words.
For trade purpose if say, those who require can learn other language like it happens for French, Mandarin etc in India, there is nothing bad in it.
What has happened in past 50-400 Years is that we are getting away from our own values and get attracted towards west whether it is good or not.

I am of the strong Opinion that we should not even talk on this subject and make Hindi the official language of Hindustan.

  • In my opinion, English should continue to be the official language of India, Because all our government work is being done in english, our Education system and most of the literature in India is now being written in English. It is the common language being used throughout the world.
Due to technology advancement, World now become the global village, so in order to live in this village we need a common language and english is serving that role.

  • There are 22 National languages of India including Hindi. Untill 1965, articles 343 and 345 specified that Hindi to be the official language in the Devangiri script even though all the states were allowed to adopt their local languages. However, English language was considered the foreign language and thus was considered as the official language to the Union of India.

Being a North Indian its easy for me to use Hindi as it is for me to use English. However, for a South Indian or any other person with a different Mother Tongue finds it difficult to use Hindi to communicate for official purposes. Although Hindi is necessary in every school, that doesn't imply that everyone would be affluet with Hindi because it's not their Mother Tongue. So they find it easy to communicate with English.

Moreover, with globalization, English should be made official language of India as it useful in communicating with other countries for business. When one goes abroad, English is the medium which helps to adopt and live in a foreign place.

  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -Soumya Ranjan Pathy (06/21/15)
  • There is a difference between official language and national language. National language is the language given keeping in mind nation's identity. Since in our country every state has different language there is no one national language to symbolize our country. Official language is the language use for communication at the official level. There are currently 22 official languages in India, excluding English. Each state is allowed to choose its own official language based on its demographic surveys. People of Dravidian origin are more comfortable in English than in hindi. and since education system in our country had included every streams(like science, economics, engineering, etc) in english since pre-independence, it was decide to have english as second official language. English is mostly spoken language in all over the world. We cannot discontinue using this language as a means of communication with the foreign nations.

Hindi is one of the languages in India. But it doesn't symbolize the whole India. All the 22 languages are important part of our history and our life. They should be cherished for many more centuries to come.
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -piaChopra (06/21/15)
  • gudmorning everyone!
As far as I am concerned English should be continued as an official language and most of the official work should be done in english.

1)accepting some other language doesn't mean that we are ignoring or disrespecting our mother tongue it actualy signifies that how flexible and intelligent we are that besides our mother tongue we can easily communiticate in English.
2)English is global language and there is no harm in making it also an official language because it becomes easier for foreign country officials to underatand. our policies .
    3) yes Hindi reflects our culture our identity but accepting English as an official language will not effect our culture. An official language means that you are using that particular language for official purposes like at government works etc it doesn't mean that it is mandatory for citizens to communicate in same language rather they can speak in which ever language they want.
-It actualy helps us to think beyond our borders and helps in dealing with various difficulties when you go outside country for some tour purposes.

  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -Vinod Kumar (04/06/15)
  • Yes I do agree English became part and parcel of our language in our country. Hindi may be the National Language of India but still majority of communication is done through English itself.English should be continued because there might be chances of problems if we suddenly switch it to other language.

The reason I support for English is that... For Example
    I) Top most colleges in the world are in Foreign countries, majority of them are in US, where teaching is done through English only. if a student doesn't communicate well in English then he might face problems,
    2) From the employee point of view, majority of IT companies work for other countries. So even for them we need to have proper knowledge of English.
Not only these we have so many things linked to English as our country is still a developing nation which depends on other countries for mutual benefits
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -Himansu Rath (04/06/15)
  • Yes , in our country English should continue to be the official language.. English language is accepted in every country.it is the most popular and largely used language in world. To do business, Any deal or Communication with other nation we must know english.
if we don't properly understand english how we do business ?. our economic depends on importing and exporting goods and Industrialization .if we know english then easily we do trade with other country ,allow them to build industry in our country so people get job.

To compete with other countries in world we must use English as the official language.
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -mounika rayaprolu (03/21/15)
  • hello everyone, i wold like to say that language is the medium of communication i.e; to express our ideas, views, thoughts and feelings with others. we all are Indians and it is our duty to respect each one's language. we should not feel shy to communicate n our mother tongue. coming to Hindi it is the language spoken by majority of people in India. so, it is necessary for every Indian to adapt it. now, the point of continuing English as our official language i think it will be no harm till we respects or languages. the point English is a global language and it is very important to learn it to communicate with everyone is acceptable. the foreign trades meetings with other countries continues in English. but it doesn't says that we have to adapt English forgetting our own languages. so, to continue English as our official language will does not make any sense. it is our thoughts accepting it dealing with it makes a sense.
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -himanshu soni (03/10/15)
  • I appreciate everybody's pt. of view regarding this topic.
As we all know that every discussion has two faces; one is for yes and the other for no.
English is such a language that is widely used all over India for communicating with people easily and effectively. Hindi is our national language and it should be, but on the other hand when we look for the development of India, it is somehow related with all foreign countries. English can be used as the official as well as professional language of India for communicating worldwide. Being an Indian we can say that Hindi should be given the highest priority, but what about the people from WB, Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Karnataka and places having their own regional languages. Even i have seen the grocery store keeper in chennai speaks english with the people who are unaware of the regional language of Chennai. it is just because Chennai people are much comfortable with the language they speak and to communicate with the non- citizens of that place, they use the one and only language that is english and is understood by them. so i would like to conclude that English should be continued as the official language of India taking along Hindi as the national language of India.
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -Naveen Dhunna (03/10/15)
  • I appreciate Everybody's pint of view.

I would like to put some light on one side of the coin that Hindi is the only national language but unfortunately it is not followed in many of the regions in India. There are no set or categories of national language as one of my friend has written that there are 22 national languages. Those languages fall under the categories of Regional language.

English though it is a foreign language but origin of English is from our old Sanskrit language.

English is already an official language and also I would like to add one point here that for an Impression everybody prefers to talk in English weather that person is comfortable in English or not.

In India, many MNC has set up their offices and they communicate in English only. So to get a job or I say reputed job in MNC, one has to speak English.

  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -IamJay (02/09/15)
  • Knowledge of English is very important and every Indian must make an attempt to learn it.
English should be considered as a vital language to learn and should be made compulsory, and should be taught in schools, colleges and universities. Since English is considered as one of the major language and is been spoken in most part of the world, it should be kept as an official language.By making it official India will open its doors to easier business and international relations.
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -satish (02/08/15)
  • In my opinion, for the time being we should continue with English as official language but simultenously we should make Hindi as a mandatory subject in school. And aftervteacher a generation of school going people we should implement Hindi as our official language.
Hindi is more easy to speak and read for MoST of the indian, in terms of writing English may have the advantage of being easier language.
There may be some resistance initially from the regional party but in longer term they will understand the benefits of using hindi as official language, it will help them to communicate with their other countrymen freely as their will be a common language which everyone knows.
English is not necessary for being a part of global village because as per my knowledge many countries like china ,japan ,south korea to name few don't use english as their official but still they are established members of globalized world.
    Thank you.
  • RE: English should continue to be the official language of India. -chandu (02/08/15)
  • English should continue to be the official language, like its been so far. Hindi is not spoken in all parts of India. Almost all the IT companies that r being run in our country has ppl from all parts of India, serving clients frm other countries. One cannot keep learning diff languages and cannot keep switching between languages to the context. It makes everyone's life and work easier by having one language to communicate. English is the best and the easiest. The govt..shud concentrate its actions towards more relevant topics to be dealt with. Start with a strict ban of tobacco, brutal strict policies against littering the roads, etc.
