FDI in Retail - Will really affect the farmers of India? - Group Discussion

For

- Farmers might have to shut down their farms due to corporatization of the farming sector.

- It has divided India’s social, political and trading classes. It works on the “divide and rule” concept.

- It would mean depreciation of Indian money which will have a negative impact on the economy.

- The retailers will have an enormous control over their suppliers and indirectly affecting the farmers.

- This kind of structure would result in reduced farm prices and thus, closure of farms.

- It will have disastrous consequences on the Indian farmers as buyers will have total control over the sellers according to this policy.

- FDI will let some major players emerge in the retail segment. Big retail outlets will enjoy monopoly in selling and in buying as well. This means that the poor farmers will not have much optiona to sell their crop in the market causing them to lower their selling price and shrink the margins.

Against

- It will be profitable to the farmers as middlemen will give them a better price for their goods.

- Farmers will get an opportunity to supply their produce to the big chains directly rather than going through intermediate brokers.

- The induction of the foreign investors will definitely help the small traders i.e. the farmers.

- It will deepen the economic cooperation between India and US.

- Agricultural products will form a very small percentage of the products these retail outlets would sell. The majority of products will be the finished goods. Snce these retail chains will source these products from China and other countries, more than farmers this will affect our local industries.

  • Fdi policy is good for employment but there is loss of small scale retailer like kiran store. Other countries get more profit then our country because they invest and after selling profit goes there that's why fdi is not good policy.

  • Retailing is one of the pillars of Indian economy and accounts for about 12-15 percent of GDP and ..i believe that FDI will be beneficial for farmers group as we can see from the policy that half the amount of capital invested by brands are to be put for back end infrastructure which will aid the farmer economy as it will lower the loss of products by preventing it from getting perished and thereby the farmers will not be compelled to sell these perishable items at whatever price they get.Beside that the farmers will not have to depend on middlemen for there items to be sold..because of which they get less money in compared to what they would have got if sold directly.
this will also integrate farmer consumer relationship.
again we all will get fresh vegetables due to FDI companies investment in backend infrastructure.
we should have made organised retailer system by our own but we all know that india economy is not enough to boost reta.iling i.e.investors and government don't have surplus capital.so..i think by introducing FDI in retailing we can get over this capital aspect and hence eradicate farmers crisis condition that is preavailing now.

  • FDI in retail is must to create infrastructure and fruits of development to all. But farmers may be protected by providing minimum support price of their products by government and the price of the products to be reviewed quarterly.

  • FDI reduces the income level of small and medium farmers. then most of the farmers would be forced to stop their production. Then how it would be fruitful to Indian economy?

  • How can we say that FDI in retail sector will be fruitful for Indian economy, because if fdi is permitted then small vendors will be removed from the market and it creates unemployment. Income generated by foreign investors transferred from India to outside india., most of the income transferred to foreign countries so indian economy cann't develop through FDI.

  • 51% FDI, In Multi brand retail , will help farmers most, as supply chain infrastructure of , india is so poor, and coldstorage capacity is also minimun, india is bulk ptoducer of potato, tomato, as a reason they are rotten and farmers have to sold them in lower price, and meditaors give less price then actual price.
fdi in retail ,will remove all the medidators and try to five maximum benefits to farmers, and end consumer

  • The FDI in retail will help the farmers in improving their financial conditions and it will provide a platform to the small businesses to showcase their products via these retailers.

The farmers will get the real prices for their products.
