Federer Scores, Serena Clinches Another Win
For tennis greats Roger Federer and Serena Williams, the Cincinnati tournament this year has been scintillating. Federer won his sixth championship in Cincinnati after fending off one bad set. Serena Williams too scored an impressive victory.
Federer won his match by beating David Ferrer 6-3, 1-6 and 6-2 in the Western & Southern Open. For Federer, this is also a triumph because this is the sixth time he has won the title for when he's reached the tournament's title match. Federer scored against an opponent to improve 16-0 against Ferrer who won only 5 sets off him overall.
It was a sweet victory for Federer following his disappointment over the match at Toronto last week against French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.“I’ve been bringing home some smaller ones,” Federer has been quoted as saying “I’m happy to get the big one.”
American star Serena Williams shone too with a win that gave her the much needed boost. Williams now looks to garner more titles in upcoming matches. Serena beat rival Ana Ivanovic through a 62 minute match 6-4,6-1 which is a massive breakthrough.
For Serena too, this victory is an achievement because this is the first time she has reached the finals in Cincinnati and won. Last year, she lost to Victoria Azarenka on a third-set tiebreaker. Serena improved to 5-0 in the finals and remarked that “Definitely my best performance of the summer,” and that “Hopefully not the last. This is definitely a level that can take me to the (U.S. Open) title. I still have a lot of work to do. It’s definitely a better level than I’ve played all year, to be honest.”
Ivanovic had been unwell during her win over Sharapova and could not face up to Williams in the final. Serena scored 12 aces to reach 7-1 in her career against Ivanovic. 'Only?' Ivanovic has been quoted as saying 'It felt like way more.' Williams too had her share of challenges. She developed a stiff back that limited her serve in the semi-finals to double-fault in the first game, but Williams charged on. 'I felt it a little bit in the second, but I just was so excited for this final and to be in the final,' Serena has been quoted as saying 'I just really felt like I had nothing to lose. So I was able to relax.'
Ivanovic will now move to top 10 rankings in the WTA due to her strong play in Cincinnati too. 'It's the biggest final I've been in in a while. It feels good to be part of it,' Ana has been quoted as saying 'There are still a few points in my game that I feel I need to work on for the U.S. Open and also for the end of season. Definitely exciting times.'
With their talented moves and strong determination to succeed, Williams and Federer have proved the naysayers wrong. Both the dedicated and skilled tennis players have shown that when it comes to winning, age is just a number. What counts is the will to battle on.
