Give life after death - pledge your organs
“Give life after death” is a very evocative and profound conception that by donating your organs you continue to be supportive of life even after death.
For:
- Life- saving: Single individual can save up to 15 lives by donating his organs post his death
- Organ transplantation could help severely ill patients to become prolific members of the society
- Helps in saving long term medical costs as the patient will no more have to rely on continuous treatment
- It could also increase the life span of the individual
- No costs are to be borne by the organ donor
Against:
- The donated organ/cell/tissue may be incompatible with the patient’s body
- Because of the in - acceptance of the organ/cell/tissue by the body, the patient can become more critical or it could also be fatal
- In India, certain religions don’t permit to donate one’s organ
- The state decides to whom the donation has to be made, neither the donor nor the family has the right to decide
- India, is currently not fully equipped for the donations in terms of trained transplant surgeons as well as co-ordinators, hospital infrastructure, etc
- There is also a laxity in the packing, transporting and the retrieval of organs
- We are not yet fully equipped with the best of machinery as well as the advanced technology of the transplantation
- Laxity in organizations, who could help and support the donors for the legal and maintenance procedures
- Illegal donation: A lot of doctors, surgeons do illegal transplants, where in the donor is not aware that any of his part is being removed
- Individuals who are not registered with any organization, cannot have their ‘after – death’ wish fulfilled, unless they breathe their last, in a hospital
- Lengthy paperwork procedure is required
- There is no guarantee that the organ/cell/tissue being donated is in a good and a healthy condition
Conclusions:
- We should take efforts in improving our technology and infrastructure for the donations to take place in a hygienic and healthy way for both the donor as well as the receptor
- Awareness should be created amongst the public and their fears should be alleviated.
