Have you ever committed a mistake at work?

Have you ever committed a mistake at work?

To err is human. So, it is perfectly OK if you committed a mistake at work but before answering the question analyse the magnitude of mistake you did and the effect it had on the company.

What is more important is – what did you do to rectify the mistake and make sure that you don’t do it again?

  • If you think you haven't, well think again. Everyone makes mistakes. It is perfectly fine if you created a couple of blunders too. What is more important ,and probably the reason they asked you this question, is whether you have it in you to acknowledge your mistakes instead of simply denying them or shifting the blame to someone else. Answer in affirmative and then prepare yourself to give a couple of examples where you made mistakes, took the responsibility for it and was able to fix the blunder at the end of the day. Problem solved!

You might as well be prepared to explain that you learnt a lesson from the mistake that you made and have taken proper measure so as to not repeat them ever after. You do not have to talk about those blunders that proved to be beyond repair and bad for the company you were working for.

They might also ask you to tell them about the effect of your mistake on the company. Whatever you did, it should end in "problem solved by you." Even if they ask you the biggest mistake you ever made, you do not necessarily have to be dangerously honest. Stay on the safe side by acknowledging those mistakes that you made, solved it too, and learnt lessons from it which has made you better at work.
