Higher education in India should be privatized

Every economy is based on its people who are well educated and informed. Higher education that encourages quality learning is essential for the growth of economy. It is necessary for our government to make the higher education accessible to all. But it is not as easy as it seems. There are several severe challenges and problems in the present education system. Along with the local challenges, the people have to deal with the global competitiveness. To cope up with all these challenges, do you think higher education in India should be privatized?

Yes

• Along with the accessibility, government also needs to focus on the quality of education that requires investment. Indian government doesn’t have sufficient funds for the purpose.

• Higher education is more of a state funded activity and therefore government cannot go beyond its public budget.

• The main focus of the government is to focus on the primary education, and therefore higher education in India should be handed over in private hands.

• There is no need to fund the higher education. Instead it should be supplemented by loans and grants that can be used by the students.

• When the higher education in India is privatized, then the institutes will be independent of political interventions. They will be autonomous and can take their own decisions.

No

• Privatization of higher education will be just a profitable business for investors and industrialists, and nothing more.

• Most of the private institutes in India and in fact in other developing countries just focus on quantity and not on quality.

• There is a thin line between the privatization and commercialization of education that can be easily crossed resulting in problems like higher fees, capitation fees, and many more.

• With the privatization of education, the greater focus will be on the corporate oriented education creating a big mismatch in the different streams of leaning.

• Privatization will not only lead to problems for students but will also exploit the teachers and professors. The salaries will not regulated by the government agencies.

Conclusion

If we talk about the quality higher education, it will come from the private sector. Government doesn’t have enough funds to invest in higher education, and in a way they are right. Until and unless people won’t receive the primary education, how will they become eligible for higher education? With the increasing demand for higher education, privatization seems the only way. But there should be some rules or powers in hands of government to keep a check on institutes. The higher education system can improve only with the right association of the public and private sector.

  • Privatizing higher education in India will be a demotivating move for the brilliant youth who lack the fund to feed the private institutes. Presently, the private institutes are more commercial focussing on their wealth count, rather than the quality of the education.

India is a developing country, and not every citizen is rich enough to afford joining the private institutes. The literacy count in India will reduce drastically which will directly hit the economic development of the country. The country can march towards the tag of developed nation only by the educated youths springing into play. With increase in the rate of education through privatisation, we will harm our progress.

Coming on to the quality of education, Indian degree has a great value worldwide, and our brains are welcomed to work anywhere in the world. This is due to their potential and education. If the quality of education gets hampered, then we would lose our charm in the international market. This is going to be a big bold punch on our status, dignity and prestige.

Thus, in every aspect the higher education should retain its value; hence should not be privatized.
