How to clear your WAT and get into a good Management college?


Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program originated in the late 19th Century when industrialization touched its ultimate heights and scientific approaches of management were the order of the day. The top class universities in US and Europe started this program in various aspects of business like accounting, finance, operations, marketing and human resources.

Indian Institute of Management (IIM)’s known for the best in class management studies conduct Common Admission Test (CAT) every year for selection & screening aspirants in management studies. There are many other institutions of high grade in India that provide MBA courses in different parts of the country aiming to improve the performance of the corporate \ organizations that contribute to the development of the country.

CAT and all similar entrance tests are computer based tests that measure the quantitative ability, data interpretation, verbal ability and logical reasoning skills of the candidates at the first level of the screening.

As a recent improvement in the selection procedure is the introduction of Writing Ability Test (WAT) by some institutes as the second level for those who clear the first. WAT assesses the writing skills and critical thinking of the candidates which is mostly a pen - to - paper test.

The time limit would differ from one institute to the other and in general would range between 20 – 30 minutes. Hence it requires lot of practice to deliver an effective essay which is not just judged based on the language. The evaluation will be made in different perspectives like logic behind the argument, presentation of supportive facts, analysis and accuracy in the data.

Here are some tips to write an effective essay

- Understand the topic and firm up your approach to present your essay

- Plan the number of points you would like to emphasize upon based on the availability of time.

- Break up each point of discussion into paragraphs that can give a better presentation.

- Do not use too many jargons as they give an artificial look to the essay.

- Be concise and use bullet points appropriately to give a striking impact to the reader.

- Do not aim for a lengthy essay at the cost of effective one and just try to stick to the minimum number to words that is specified in the examination.

- Write a good introduction and conclusion that strongly emphasizes on your approach.

- Do take time to read through and make the changes\ corrections.
