Is archeology is a good field to pursue?

I want to study archeology but my parents are of the view that this field is no more efficient for a student. Please tell me in detail the career prospects of this field so that I can convince my parents to let me pursue the career of my choice.

India’s rich cultural heritage makes a career in archaeology wide ranging and proficient compared to the top-preferred career options in India. There is indeed good scope for students of archaeology in India as well as abroad. You can either choose to work in in museums, archives, universities and numerous research institutes dedicated to discovery of India’s glorious past, or you can appear for the Union Public Service Examinations conducted every year for the post of archaeologists in the Archaeological Survey of India.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the foremost recruiter of archaeologists in India both at the centre and the state levels. Once you attain a degree in this field, you can apply for appropriate positions in the ASI by clearing examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or by the State Public Service Commission (SPSC).

One can opt for lectureship at colleges after appearing for the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the Junior Research Fellow (JRF)-Lectureship examination conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) after a post-graduation degree. The jobs are secure in both government and private sector.

Apart from these, these are good job prospects abroad as well. You can be a part of research teams and travel around the world excavating various newbie of wonders. One can also choose to work abroad as curators, heritage conservators, archivists and teachers.
