Jammu & Kashmir On The Mend: Committee to Assess Impact Of The Flood
On 7th September, 2014 a massive flood occurred to destroy lives and livelihood across the troubled state of Jammu & Kashmir. Rain of an abnormal intensity impacted the mountain state in a terrible manner and people struggled to cope with the harrowing tragedy unleashed by massive floods. The Valley now struggles to rebuild what was destroyed, but it is a difficult process.
Many experts have explained how the rain was due to the adverse impact of climate change. Other analysis was also done. The aftermath of the tragedy now confronts the people and the Centre is working to alleviate their suffering. A 5 member committee will visit the flood affected areas to ensure a on the spot accurate assessment of the damages. The committee will now submit its interim report within a period of 2 weeks.
The 5 member committee was constituted by the Supreme Court to make a complete assessment of the current situation in flood ravaged parts of J&K. The report will then be submitted based on the same to the apex court. The apex court bench headed by CJ R. M. Lodha has indicated that the committee will now work towards ensuring people in J&K get a chance at rehabilitation and recovery following the massive floods.
The court has also indicated that the committee will include a senior registrar of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court (posted at the city of Srinagar), Secretary of the J&K Department of Revenue, Relief & Rehabilitation as well as nominee of the central government and presidents of Srinagar and Jammu region bar associations.
The Committee's interim report will be submitted to the J&K High Court and it will pass the appropriate orders deemed fit as per the findings. The court has also indicated that the HC proceedings will not be impeded through any method of the hearing of matter prior to it.
The Jammu & Kashmir Bank also convened a Special State Level Bankers Committee Meeting to assess the extent of devastation caused by he floods in J&K, especially in the areas such as the Kashmir Valley. Suitable measures have to now be implemented for relief an restructuring of credit facilities in affected areas and discussions on such aspects should not be neglected during the rehabilitation process either.
The state's leading bank and the finances that have been impacted through this flood are likely to damage the performance of this state in the upcoming financial quarter though sources say it is early days yet when it comes to assessing the finances.
Analysts quoted by the media have indicated that agricultural and horticultural crops have been damaged as a result of this flood. Rebuilding a life after a tragedy is the hardest thing in the world. If world leaders do not listen and fight climate change, the voices that will cry out in suffering due to disasters such as these will multiply in number.
