Mostly Ocean engineers are employed as field engineer or site manager that requires inspection and testing of the underwater structures. As it is seen that the repair for under water technology is frequent, job prospects in this area is vast. In the field of designing, ships and boat builders, offshore constructors employ ocean engineers. They are also hired as design consultants and for the ships and submarines of the navy and Ministry of Defence.
Ocean engineers are also employed by equipment manufacturers to design products such as propulsion systems, auxiliary systems sub-sea production systems and control systems. Ocean engineers can work as consultants to give professional advice and technical support to those in the offshore industry. There is wide scope for offshore research. Hence, those with master’s degree in the subject can also opt for research. There is a huge scope for researchers. As a researcher one can study the ocean and sea environment in order to research how salt water affects watercraft and vessels. Ocean engineers are employed by government and private undertakings as Ship Surveyors to carry out inspections to ensure that any serious defects arising from operation are made good, and that a safe and seaworthy structure is maintained.
An Ocean engineer's work requires frequent travelling. Also, the work sites they visit might be hazardous. They might have to work for long hours as to meet the deadlines assigned to them. At the same time they face unpleasant and dangerous conditions at sea. They have to be away from home for long periods. These are some challenges that one has to face to be successful in this field as success doesn’t come easy in this particular field.
