Kaveri Engine: Pitfalls and Milestones

Kaveri Engine: Pitfalls and Milestones

Question: DRDO has initiated new milestones in aero-engine technology, but there have been obstacles. Discuss in light of the project for the development of the Kaveri Engine.

Project for the development of Kaveri Engine was sanctioned in 1989 and probable date of completion was extended to 2009

Further continuation within the cost ceiling has been approved

Pitfalls

- Technological problems faced on account of development due to complexities of engine system

- Lack of availability of raw materials and critical components

- Inadequate manufacturing/infrastructure/test facilities within the nation

- Lack of availability of skilled/technical manpower in aero engine technology

- Increased scope during development

Milestones

- Successful completion of High Altitude testing for 73 hours and 57 hours trial on Flying Test Bed indicates level of technological capability and maturity

- Full Authority Digital Engine Control System has been indigenously developed, designed and qualified

- There has been indigenous development and certified type for 12 materials

- Total of 9 Kaveri prototypes and 4 Kaveri Core Engine prototypes have been developed

- More than 2550 hours of engine testing has been accumulated

- Kaveri Engine was integrated with IL-76 Aircraft and also successfully flight tested

Facts and Stats

- Total expenditure on development of Kaveri Engine is INR 2101 crore

- Aero engine developed by DRDO lacks thrust power so Kaveri derivative “dry” engine without after burner will be used for powering Unmanned Combat Aircraft
