Make In India: Modi's Mantra For Manufacturing
PM Narendra Modi has just launched the Make In India campaign which is focused on transforming the nation into a massive global manufacturing hub. As part of this campaign, plans are afoot to cut red tape and develop fixed assets and infrastructure apart from business friendly policies to spur manufacturing in this area.
Currently, the Indian manufacturing companies contribute only 15% of India's GDP and the aim is to now raise it to 25%. The Make in India campaign comes on the heels of the stupendous success of India's mission to Mars, Mangalyaan. With solid proof that India's homegrown R&D as well as technology has come of age, Make in India is the next key step in the natural progression of India to superpower status, provided the campaign is effectively implemented.
PM Modi unveiled the campaign with the intent of ensuring that industrial houses do not leave Indian shores. The PM also remarked that increase in manufacturing should also be in such a way that it benefits the youth of India. The aim, he said is to bring about a boost in manufacturing which will lead to a rise in jobs besides enhancing purchasing power and creating a bigger market for manufacturers.
The Make In India initiative is focusing on urging and encouraging companies which are domestic and international to invest in India. Many proposals within the initiative are aimed at bring foreign companies to Indian shores and transforming India into a manufacturing hub. The campaign was launched during an event hosted at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi and it was beamed live across the country and the world.
The programme lays stress on the development of 25 sectors with an eye towards employment generation and skills building. The 25 sectors include chemicals, automobiles, IT, textiles, aviation, pharmaceuticals, ports, tourism and hospitality, leather, health and wellness, railways, design manufacturing, mining, biotechnology, electronics and biotechnology among others.
FDI was also termed by Modi as First Develop India for Indians, and a wealth of opportunities for foreigners, at the Vigyan bhawan event where the Make In India campaign was launched on 25th September. The campaign was termed as the step of the lion by the PM. The logo of the campaign is a lion composed of segments symbolic of strength, national pride and manufacturing. The PM also emphasised that the aim of this campaign is also to ensure that the “poor reach the middle class faster.”
The event was webcast through 100 diplomatic outposts to countries all over the world from Abu Dhabi to Zagreb. Apart from this, the campaign also involved the unveiling of a portal and brochures on all 25 sectors which are being targeted through it. Hopefully, Indian and foreign companies will now Make In India. This campaign is history in the making, if all goes well.
