Male makeup artists in Bollywood: a logical thinking or male chauvinism?
Male makeup artists in Bollywood: a logical thinking or male chauvinism?
The Supreme Court ruled out decades-old discriminatory rule of CCMAA on Monday. The rule barred the women to work as make-up artists in Bollywood. The Supreme Court gave the ruling that it is against the constitutional rights that allows women to choose her profession freely. As per the earlier rules set up by the union, women can be hair stylists but cannot work as makeup artists in Bollywood. What do you think, did the Supreme Court made a right decision? Let us share our thoughts on the topic: Male makeup artists in Bollywood: a logical thinking or male chauvinism?
Logical thinking
• As a makeup artist, when it comes to male and female comparison, the first choice will always be given to female employees.
• The film industry is such an area where most of the times employment comes at a cost for women workers. It not only costs women, but also snatches job from male employees.
• Women always have their own set of problems when it comes to family and other responsibilities. The producers cannot bear the loss of time and money.
• There is always a problem of traveling with women employees, and film industry demands extensive traveling at various locations.
• It has been three decades since male makeup artists rule is prevailing in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Makeup has been for men and hair styling for women, and it has been doing well till this time as it provides equal job opportunities to male and female in the film industry.
Male Chauvinism
• It is pure male chauvinism as job doesn’t depend on gender, but it depends on how well qualified you are for the job. Denying women make up artists the job would be like denying women to be doctors, pilots, police or a place in the army. Even if the women are qualified, can they be denied the job for just for their gender? This is a clear discrimination and male insecurity.
• It is the rule made by the males and its association just to keep an upper hand in the makeup industry of Bollywood.
• It is irrational forced policing and archaic rules that are prevailing in the key five states from years. Males cannot counter the change easily.
• Males want to avoid the competition by maintaining a close shop and stopping women from challenging them in a more remunerative field.
Conclusion
If the matter is analyzed from all the aspects, it is the CCMAA union that is responsible for maintaining a system which supports only men. Also, male makeup artists carry a fear that if women were allowed to work in the film industry, they will lose their jobs. However, it is not completely true. Definitely, somewhere at some point, females can get a preference, but it cannot be the same case always. In a competitive Bollywood industry, it is only the work that can secure job forever. Therefore, it is the time for male makeup artists to support the decision, and become progressive, instead of becoming regressive.

- Make-up artist is again a job opportunity as any other opportunity. It has nothing to do with the gender. Restricting females from being a make-up artist or males from being hair-stylist doesn’t have a justified reason to back. Just having a discriminating trend being followed for a longer time does not defend the same for being a correct order.
Males might fear of losing a job, as it is understandable that females do get some preference in some job patterns, but it would not be all that correct. The industry requires a good presentation and the financiers want to get a good multiplication of their money at the end of the day. This could be possible only with quality work. It wouldn’t hold good with gender discrimination.
Supreme Court is very much right in its decision in ruling out the old trend. CCMAA is just a private association which has developed some sets of rules to have uniformity in the functioning of the industry. That does not give the association any authority to discriminate any gender from working for a particular profession without a valid reason for the same. Hence, Male make-up artists in Bollywood is purely male chauvinism.
