MediaTek Creates Research Roots: Forms R&D Centre In Tech City Bengaluru

Taiwan's semiconductor firm MediaTek has opened a new research and development centre in Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka. This R&D Centre will focus on innovations and development of technologies for wireless communication. MediaTek will also receive help in areas such as connectivity management and home entertainment devices through the development of technologies by this R&D centre.

This will be the second R&D facility for MediaTek following the establishment of its first centre in Noida. The Taiwanese semiconductor firm has set aside around $200 million for investment in India over the years. The company is focusing on the development of reasonably priced and affordable technology for super-mid markets.

Ching-Jiang Hsieh, the president of MediaTek has been quoted by the media as saying “The opening of our new Bengaluru centre will allow us to explore new and exciting opportunities across our broad spectrum of technologies and put MediaTek solutions in the hands of billions of consumers.”

Akshay Aggarwal, the general manager at MediaTek's Bengaluru office has announced that the company will now hire around 100 professionals with extensive understanding of integrated circuit designs. The plan is to ultimately increase the work-force to 500 professionals over the span of the next few years.

Besides making SOCs for tablets as well as mobile phones, the semiconductor firm is also looking to diversify into areas such as connectivity and Internet of Things, the latter being a niche sector. MediaTek R&D centres around the world will coordinate with this one for good results.

The new commitment is a vote of confidence for the Indian R&D sector's growth and development. With the Indian government also looking to increase expenditure for research in recent times, science will find many takers in India. MediaTek's new commitment underscores the confidence the company also has for the business landscape, and technologies. India has a tremendous potential for growth in these areas. The president of MediaTek was also quoted as saying "With this, we believe anyone can achieve something amazing, and realise their potential to become, what we call, an Everyday Genius."

Aggarwal, GM, MediaTek Bangalore was quoted as saying "We are delighted to be a part of the growing technology ecosystem in Bengaluru. By year-end, we plan to build a workforce of 100 professionals with a strong understanding of the thriving integrated circuit (IC) design industry, and aim to grow this number to over 500 over the next few years. The R&D centre will develop exciting new products and applications, enabling India to harness growth opportunities in emerging technologies, such as LTE."

MediaTek is now looking to diversify its research capabilities through the establishment of the new centre. Science has the capacity to unlock solutions to humanity's problems and the private sector is now willing to bank on this.
