PM Modi spoke at length on several key issues during the Independence Day speech from the Red Fort. Displaying committment to his earlier views , the PM emphasised on vital and important issues for resolving the problems of the nation . He addressed the urgent need to end poverty.
Modi likened the freedom struggle during pre-independence days to the nation's current struggle to eliminate poverty. He also indicated that the SAARC nations to join hands so that they can fight poverty. Modi also reiterated his committment to hard work by saying "Work 12 hours, I will work 13 hours. You work 14 hours, I will work 15." to motivate his government to make sincere efforts.
The PM also announced the scrapping of the Planning Commission and said a new institution will replace it with"creative thinking on public-private partnerships, optimum utilisation of resources, giving direction to state governments, an organisation that will strengthen federalism and more." The new institution is going to move in a new direction with new blood and new thought said Modi . The PM cited the reason for this as "But financial planning has grown out of the scope of central government."
Modi also made a plea for providing toilets and total sanitation in out country. He urged the construction of enough toilets so that open defecation is eliminated in the country. The PM also spoke of his dream for Digital India apart from speaking of the urgent need to end female foeticide and rape in India. The PM also stressed on good governance and revival of the manufacturing sector . He touched on many topics including e-governance and long distance education. He emphasised the importance of growth of manufacturing in the electronic sector. The PM announced the scheme for bringing banking services to rural India through the Jan Dhan Yojana.
He also spoke of the need to set up a Skill Development Mission to provide the youth with technological and entrepreneurial skills and said "I want to prepare a country of youth with skills that will build the country, and change the world. " Modi also stressed on the need for foreign investment in key areas such aas manufacturing chemicals , agro-businesses and coffee. Modi also urged Indians to stop sacrificing girls in the hopes of a boy and pointed out the achievement of Indian women sportspersons to motivate people to have positive views about the girl child.
The PM also spoke of the need for preventing sexual violence and rape against women. He spoke out against caste or communal violence and also spoke of the need for one goal, platform and direction. The PM spoke out against majoritarianism and spoke of consensus for nation-building Modi also said that "This country was not made by governors and governments. This country was made by farmers, labourers, our youth, the rishis, munis, scientists, generations of them."
