Question: Union Ministry of Home Affairs has launched several initiatives for increasing the safety and security of India’s citizens. Outline some of the initiatives rolled out by MHA.
- MHA has taken numerous initiatives to ensure safety and security in the country.
- Security forces have been deployed in NE and LWE affected states and areas where there is militancy
- Delhi Police launched an application named Himmat that receives distress signals from women and ensures the presence of police within 5 to 7 minutes
- MHA has set up a Nationwide Emergency Response System to meet the needs of women in distress
- DOT has allocated 112 as the number for calling in times of emergency
- MHA has also assigned cash relief to migrants in the hilly areas of Jammu division at par with Kashmiri migrants
- Additional INR 5 lakh is also being paid to next of kin for those who passed away during the anti Sikh riots
- Under the UDAAN scheme, employment is to be provided to unemployed J&K youth whereby 3361 have been trained, 3133 are offered jobs and around 2500 are working in companies
- GoI signed a peace deal with National Socialist Council of Nagaland(IM)which is the heart of the Government’s Act East Policy
- Crimes and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems has been launched in 2009 with an outlay of INR 2,000 crore
- Around 71% of the police stations in the nation have used this software to register FIRs
Central Citizen Portal and central database for citizens is being developed for the following services:
- Reporting crimes
- Passport Verification
- Other Verification
- Accessing Victim Compensation Fund
- Accessing Legal Services
- Human Trafficking and Missing Persons complaint
- List of Most Wanted Criminals
- Publication of list of proclaimed offenders
- Publication of charge sheeted offenders in cases pertaining to crime against women
- This project also integrated with e-court and e-prison applications to improve criminal justice system in the nation
- Quantum of compensation under NDRF and SDRF have more than doubled and now farmers with crop loss pegged between 33 and 49 percent are eligible for financial help
Facts and Stats
- Security forces neutralised 132 terrorists in J&K during 2014 and 2015
- J&K also experienced peaceful elections in November December 2014 with record 66% turnout
- The 321 crore worth 112 system is being designed for handling 10 lakh calls per day which needs around 3000 personnel to handle the call in the streets once completely implemented
