Misinterpretation and misuse of Freedom in India

Misinterpretation and misuse of Freedom in India

Introduction
India is enjoying its freedom since the past sixty seven years. The free India had lot many benefits and fresh aroma to breathe in. though we have lost plenty of wealth along with our freedom, still we have enough to accommodate our citizens with all the basic requirements of life. Freedom is much more than any treasure for us. But, this hard-earned freedom doesn’t matter all that delicious to the present generation, as they never had the taste of slavery.

Sweet tastes sweeter when we know the taste of bitterness; otherwise the sweetness doesn’t have any charm on its own. Everything in this world is comparative, so is the freedom for us. We are much happier in comparison to the ages of slavery; still humans don’t have the satisfaction. We still linger on to have a better living standard. It is good to progress towards the betterment, but that needs to be on the path of honesty. Losing the good old freedom in lure of better living standard is definitely a mere foolishness.

Defining Freedom

Freedom refers to the liberty and rights. It is the ‘free will’ that one can excise. But apart from this, the freedom in true sense can be defined as giving oneself their own laws. It simply means freedom do have some limitations and restriction which we need to set for ourselves. Anything beyond restriction is hazardous. As a river floods and devastates when it breaks the banks, similarly our excising our free will without any boundaries would shatter every relation.

Free India – A Responsibility for the citizens

When it comes to our free India, everyone is happy about exercising their rights and fighting for the same, but nobody is conscious ever to retain the freedom. We have all forgotten our duties and responsibilities regarding the safeguarding and channelizing the freedom so as to prevent us from getting back to the period of slavery.

There are a few things that we need to work on to retain and polish our freedom and enjoy our rights in its entirety. The things required from the citizens are:

• Duty consciousness towards the country.

• Create a better living with respect to the moral and human values.

• Accept responsibility for the progress of our country and prove your capability towards its growth.

• Freedom is to achieve progress, not to lose the hard-earned free atmosphere

• A disciplined life should be lived with principles for a decent living.

Misinterpretation of Freedom

Since many of us don’t understand the meaning of freedom, we tend to mis-interpret the term freedom with other social issues. This is the reason we always keep fighting within ourselves for the freedom which we already have. Few mis-conceptions of freedom are as follows:

• People consider freedom to be in all aspects of life without any discipline

People forget to draw the self-boundaries for the freedom that they enjoy throughout. It might be any sphere of life viz. work, culture, tradition, language, nationality, etc., everything other thing provides its complete charm only if we learn to keep within our limits. People feel the pub and bar culture to be nostalgic and that denotes their status in the society. The lifestyle modulation that we perceive throughout is very much evident of how differently we have interpret freedom, which is miles away from the original concept of being free.

• Equality

Again, equality is considered to be freedom. Equality is a virtue of freedom and not the freedom itself. Equality is a right that we can enjoy under the supervision of freedom.

• Women Empowerment

This is one of the major agitation that is fought in lieu of freedom. Whenever the debate comes on women equality or their empowerment, all the ages old scenario comes into highlight to emphasize the stress on women in the Indian society. There is nothing wrong in demanding right, but the same should not be termed as a lack of freedom for women. Women in free India have emerged as very strong links who are acting as bridge to march towards the progress of the nation.

• Fundamental Rights not understood in entirety

Fundamental rights are the guidelines and the supporting pillars for the citizens of our country on which we can rely at times of need. But the freedom that the fundamental right provides comes along with the package of limitations. We need to excise our rights in a way that should not harm others. We often forget this clause and the selfish generation forgets all the human values and exploits others to fulfil and cherish their own dreams. The child labour, slave trade and human trafficking are the well-established proof of exploitation of the Fundamental Rights.

Misuse of Freedom

The term "Freedom" is not only mis-interpret but also misused. We are blindly marching on the path of selfishness misusing our hard-earned freedom.

• An invite for Globalization and Westernization

The manner in which we have paved way to the globalization, it has almost brain-washed the nation with its lure of a promising high-class lifestyle. The westernization has destroyed our own culture and traditions and the present generation do not realize the importance and pride of our rich culture. They are just flowing away with the incorporated culture.

• Overpowering others / Political play

The politics is no less in misusing the freedom. Politics in India should be a democratic view, but we cannot flavour the democracy in its entirety due to fear. Youth don’t want to enter the politics due to fear of their lives. Politicians have made the power and rule as their personal heritage just by overpowering all others with the power and money into their pockets.

• Increasing crime rate and decreasing security

The pubs, disco, night life, high socializing nature between the genders, all these are a gift of western culture which has polluted the young minds and are responsible for the increasing crime rate in the country. With the increase in the crime incidences, we all lack the basic requirement of safety and security. Forget the Gandhian words of a woman walking confidently wearing jewels in the mid-night; in the present age, not even the men have enough confidence to move alone in the bright day light. Be it the child, females, small girls, old aged citizens, youth or any one, nobody is kept bar from the security concern. Just because few people consider their own selfish motives be their freedom and right, they have created havoc in to the lives of their co-citizens.

Conclusion

To conclude, we can say that we have made freedom a slave to our selfish motives and rage. This scenario requires an urgent transformation, so that we can keep smelling the fragrance of the freedom into our atmosphere. The more we tend to flow away with the globalization, the more we will be inviting the foreign countries to empower us. We will slowly end up losing our own economy. It is high time, please gear up and fasten your belts to pace up the race and get hold of our lost channel of free India.

  • India got liberation from British Raj on 15th August 1947. But still the true freedom was achieved on 26th January 1950. It is still a very controversial issue amongst the youth whether we are breathing in a free India or not? ‘Freedom’ is a very vague term which can be summarized as, “the means to excel and moving on”.

Everyone has a different meaning to the word ‘freedom’ and they want the word to be used for their own convenience. For peasants it was freedom from exploitation of landlords, for business class it was nothing more than exclusion from paying heavy taxes, scheduled caste (the untouchables and depressed class) had their own reason to struggle for freedom. They struggled with the hope of getting accepted in the society. The sense of freedom was extremely equivocal, and since then we are facing the same situation which never seems to end. Freedom is one of the most misinterpreted, misunderstood and misused term in our country.

Most section of the society would like to believe that freedom means “Free from all”. i.e. free from work, culture, tradition, nationality, religion, etc. But they fail to understand that freedom is the bond between all of the above mentioned terms. Freedom is nothing but the ultimate responsibility in life. For example - “Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains”. This can easily be misinterpreted. Man is ‘born free’, then why is he in chains? We do not pay attention to the bigger meaning that this phrase holds. We forget that we take birth without any insecurity, any religion or any lingual bifurcation. The chain is what connects us to all these and more importantly to humanity.

Freedom is neither in delusional equality nor in fighting for immaterial things such as right to visit pub, bar, to drink or to smoke. Freedom is mere understanding of duty and responsibility. The terrorist group is misusing their ‘freedom’ to create chaos among rest of the world through destruction, terror and intimidation. The society has become scared to use their basic rights under this chaotic terrorist world. Is it fair, for one’s misuse of freedom, another’s freedom is at stake? We are a very cultured nation. But the interpretation of freedom by youth is contradictory to the norms of the society. We need to understand that if we misinterpret the word freedom then its misuse is inevitable.
The earth is ours, we are free to do anything is what everyone thinks. But, we are forgetting that this misuse of the freedom is having an adverse affect on our environment and nature. Recent catastrophes in India are the dismal consequences of obstructing nature to take its own course.

Freedom is never concrete; it is always liable to come with some restrictions and with sense of responsibilities. After 66 years, we may have freed ourselves from the jaws of the British rule, but we still have a long way to go to taste independence and freedom from the clutches of malpractice, exploitation, mental harassment, corruption and crime. It is high time we respect the very little amount of freedom bestowed upon us the almighty and take suitable measures to help and protect it.
