Novack Notches Up The Second Win: Wimbledon 2014
Novak Djokovic shone at the Wimbledon 2014 men's final, leaving the Swiss star Federer far behind. Roger fought like a champion, but he was not able to outdo the Serbian tennis star this time. Number 1 Novak lived up to his rank with a valiant struggle that lasted 3 hours 56 minutes.
Federer spent a large part of the 4 sets fighting to win the Wimbledon battle, but it was just not meant to be. The Swiss player had hoped to secure his eighth Wimbledon men's single title but Djokovic gave it all he had.
If the women's final was one-sided, the men's final was anything but that. Federer and Djokovic dueled with athletic virtuosity and grit that was second to none. Djokovic emerged victorious with a 6-7(7), 6-4,7-6(4), 5-7 and 6-4 win that left no doubts about who the man of the moment was.
Djokovic also admired the “fighting spirit, composure” of his worthy contender Federer. The 27 year old won his 7th Grand Slam title showing just why he is number 1. Coming into the finals with 6 titles, he left with 7 leaving Federer with a grand total of 17 titles. Having lost 3 finals in a row, he broke Federer in two service games and won an amazing rally with a backhand volley winner. He was one game up from his second Wimbledon championship.
It was in the 10th game, 30-40 that Djokovic had a championship point and Federer stepped in and hit aces one after another. Djokovic netted the forehand return and both players squared off at 5-5 then. The crowd went ito cheers while the champions kept going at it.
Djokovic saved the break point when Federer steered the backhand into the net in game 7 and it was a close call when the world number 4 fought off 2 break points in the 8th game at 15-40 3-4 getting to 4-4 with the aid of a forehand cross-court winner. The chance to get to 15-30 in the upcoming service game when a overhead was smacked an overhead into the net. Djokovic did not let up and in the final game, Federer netted one backhand and managed to frame another for 0-30. Following 3 points, a single backhand went into the net and that was that.
For 8/8/1981 born Federer, the record eighth Wimbledon and 18th career Grand Slam title must now be a future goal. The 32 year old will be 33 in a month's time. Wimbledon is just a year away. With enough steel, fire, grit and determination, Federer could be looking to return next year and fight just as hard for the Wimbledon crown.
For now, Novack who also won this title in 2011 can rejoice in the glory of a second win, much like Petra Kvikova who also won the Wimbledon title last in 2011 and has just shone for the second time this year. With the 27 and 24 year old showing that you can be a winner the second time around if you give it what you've got, tennis has just got more exciting for fans across the world.
