Pinaka Mark II Rocket Successfully Test Fired: Achievement For Indian Defence

For the second time within a span of 2 days, an indigenously developed advanced version of Pinaka, Mark II rockets were successfully test fired on 9th December 2014. The rockets were test fired from a multiple barrel rocket launcher from Chandipur’s defence base.

Rocket is a Big Hit

The tests for the Pinaka Mark II rocket were conducted from the PXE or Proof and Experimental Establishment at Chandipur firing range number 2, defence sources have indicated to the media. Chandipur PXE director Appavu Raj was quoted by PTI as saying, “A total six rounds, three yesterday and three today, of the Mark-2 version of Pinaka rockets with more than a 60 km range were successfully tested.”
Defence sources indicated that “Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment of DRDO personnel with logistic support of PXE, conducted the tests.”

Features of the Rocket

An unguided rocket, Pinaka was meant to neutralise large sized areas with quick salvos. This rocket has been undergoing tough tests since the year 1995 and it was inducted into the armed forces. The present trails were conducted with enhancements in the system, according to sources.

Advanced version Mark II rockets can traverse a range of more than 60 km and they can act as force multipliers. The rockets are also perfect for complementing artillery guns.

The Pinaka system also has a rapid reaction time and high rate of firing of the system providing an edge to conflict situations which are of low intensity. The system can include several different types of warheads making it dangerous for enemies. It can fire a salvo of 12 rockets in as little as 44 seconds.

The system neutralises a target of 3.9 square kilometre. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation for the Indian Army, this system has a maximum range of 65 kilometres for the Mark II advanced version. The system was mounted on a Tatra trick for mobility. This rocket’s earlier version was also used during the Kargil war.

Defence sources indicated that the Pune based Armament Research and Development Establishment of the DRDO conducted tests in conjunction with logistics support from the PXE laboratories.

Conclusion

The Pinaka Mark II rocket is a welcome addition to India’s arsenal of defence equipment. Given the growing technological sophistication of the Pinaka system, India’s defence forces have achieved a major milestone. The scientists at DRDO and PXE have contributed towards revolutionising India’s defence systems through this advanced rocket.
