- In the next 7 years, China will be surpassed by India as the latter will become the world’s most populous country and have 1.7 billion residents by the year 2050
- This is as per fresh projections from the United Nations
- India may be lowering fertility at a faster rate than UN projections though
- 2015 revision to UN ’s World Population Projections also held that world population reached 7.3 billion as per mid 2015
- This means an addition of one billion people in the past 12 years
- World population is growing more slowly now however; 10 years ago, growth rate was 1.24 percent each year while it is currently 1.18%
- This means around 83 million people on an annual basis
- Within the next 15 years, a billion people will be added to the population
- World population is projected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030
- By the year 2050, the world will be home to 9.7 billion people and 11.2 billion by 2100
- Africa will have its population growing at the fastest rate
- Nigeria will be the third most populated country in 2050 overtaking the US
- China’s population will decline by the 2030s while India will only decline after 2069 when the population is pegged around 1.75 billion
