Mahatma Gandhi’s principles revolved around “Satya” and “ahimsa” mainly. There were other principles as well like, Brahmacharya, khadi, fasting and religion.
For:
- Each and every principle of Gandhi still holds meaning and importance in today’s society and amongst the Indian people. Human beings are social animals and acceptance in the society and amongst their own group is of utmost importance. In today’s time as well people who lie are not accepted as well as respected in the society.
- We often refrain from maintaining relations from violent people or distant ourselves from such kind of people. We like people who are calm by nature and would want to maintain relations with them.
- Not every individual can afford clothes of rich raw material like silk or cotton. Plus today also we see a lot of democrats representing the country in khadi clothes representing one of Gandhi’s principle
- Be it for any auspicious occasion or to keep our body in fit position we often resort to fast as it helps cleaning our body.
Against:
- A lot of profession like marketing or business man are supported by lies. Business men can’t always say truth or a marketing person can’t always say the truth and sell his product. Often ads also reveal fake things about their products
- Today, maximum numbers of people you find are selfish. They can hurt you to fulfil their aims and wishes, it could be physical or mental both. So till when can you bear physical violence and keep harming yourself. You will retaliate at some point of time.
Conclusion:
- Not each and every principle of Gandhi is valid today; some of them have become irrelevant while some of them are yet relevant and prevailing in the society.

- Some people cheat and are selfish and if we try to make them understand this they wont. For these people we always cannot use truth or satya. We need to also cheat and say some lies in order to beat these people. We need to do this and there is a hindi saying- "laton ke bhoot baaton se nahin mante" (bad people should be treated badly).

- I think principles of mahatma Gandhi valid today because take example of Anna Hajare he go with principles of Mahatma Gandhi and he is quite successful with example of Right to Information act. He fought for many reasons with Government with only Ahinsa, not about all the things but for some he got success.

- Gandian philosophies were solely individualistic rather nationalistic.. An individual can happily choose not to raise hand if slapped by somebody violent. But this personal attitude cant be valid when dealing national or international affairs, particularly a threat. I believe Gandhi was highly religious and educated person and all his doctrines of vegetarianism, truth,khakhi etc. still hold relevence except non-violence which he clearly exaggerated and misrepresented it with the concept of self defence.. Refraining from violence should not be percieved by our enemies (it would be mindless if we believe that india doesnt have any enemy) as our vulnerability of defending ourselves and send the message of lack in the capability of resistance which Gandhi demonstrated when he suggested Winston Chuchill not to attack Hitler, only to display witless attitude and annoy him..Who would not want Hitler to be held accountable for mass killings of so many innocent jews. The only cure of a severly infected cyst is to remove it surgically so that infection does not spread to other healthy parts of the body.
The purpose of the barbed wire is considered to be achieved when it is guarding the crop field appropriately and when the same wire becomes the reason for destruction of the crop itself, then where does the justice lies.Philosophies and personal attitudes such as gandhi's were the cause of India's slavery for nearly 800 long years, first at the hands of mughals and then english. Religious leaders would hold all sort of rituals and ceremonies when attacked by enemy instead of retrieving and defending themselves by grasping sword in their hands. The attacking enemy would release hundreds of cows in the battlefield believing that indians would not harm cows, therefore resulting in sacrifice of many humans. We have to ask ourself at a point that isn't this kind of attitude and belief a imprudent and unacceptable and to an extent, irresponsible? Not to mention the incident around 1978 or 79 when Morarji Desai, a staunch gandhi adherent, called Zia ul haq that he had complete proof and knowledge of his nuclear programme which R&AW collected after months of labour, which resulted in murder of several RAW members. Morarji's explanation that he cant lie and cant adopt the policy of violence, even if it would have costed the lives of our own people. If this kind of attitude doesnt come under the definition of mindless,thoughtless or impolitic, then what kind of attitude is it?
If India has to survive as a nation, then we must be competent enough to stand the global era and its challenges and our leadership must fulfill their duty develop the techniques and methods to gain national interest. Blindly following non violence theory would lead us nowhere except exploitation and slavery at the hands of other nations.

- though MAHATMA GANDHI is no more in his respect for nation the government of India had printed his photo on the rupee notes of Indian republic ....let me tell a short information on todays reality "as we all know that Indian government has taken a loan from world bank of a certain large amount now in present the government has no money to pay to world bank so in our government had asked the Ambani brothers to help in paying the loan amount they were willing to pay the loan but on a certain provision that Dirubhai Ambani"s photo must be printed on the Indian currency insted of Mahatma Gandhi . in return Indian government refused to accept this provision .....by these we are able to know that their is respect for Bapu in the Indian constitution nd i too love the principles of Mahatma ////////////////////////////// JAI HIND

- I completely agree that in today’s time principles of Mahatma Gandhi do not stand valid. Mahatma Gandhi followed the principles of ahimsa meaning non violence and satya meaning truth. He strongly believed in these two principles and throughout his life followed them under all circumstances. But unfortunately in today’s time we don’t see these principles being valid. People have forgotten the meaning of truth or satya. In a world where money is the most important part of life, big business houses and industries thrive on lies to make huge profits. They resort to unfair and false practices to get their deals cracked and most of the times also cheat their investors and customers. With corruption being at its highest level, violence is a method which people are seen opting for to protect themselves. Non violence is no longer believed in by the citizens of our country. Along with these, Mahatma Gandhi also believed in other principles like khaki, brahmacharya and fasting but these also don’t hold any value in today’s world.

• Principles of Mahatma Gandhi don’t stand valid in today’s capitalist world as humans have moulded the set principles and standards according to their needs.
• In today’s world money speaks more than truth. In order to earn huge profits business are hiding the reality. Today values and meaning of the success are far more different from the values of Gandhi ji which he believed and practised.
• In today’s India where corruption and apathy are growing like silent epidemics, people are scoffed at and discouraged by other people who try to implement the Gandhi’s principles. Thus it is not easy to follow them.
• Today in order to protect ourselves or take advantage over the others we are the choosing the medium of violence which is against the principle of Ahimsa or non violence. There have been many instances where the people peacefully fighting for their rights have been forced through the violent methods to put their protest to an end.
• The principles of Non-violence, Simplicity, Truth, Brahmacharya, Vegetarianism, and Faith are difficult to follow as people have lost the willingness to do so.
Against:
• Principles of Mahatma Gandhi are valid and eternal. Not all the principles are valid today but many of them are still followed and valued by most of the people.
• Satya or Truth still holds enough respect in our society as people respect those who always stay with truth. This principle gives mental satisfaction and guilt free life.
• Anna Hazare is the live example who has followed the principle of Ahimsa or non violence and pressureized the government of India to accept his conditions.
• Gandhiji’s principles can be applied by anyone who has faith in his goals and ideas. As it takes a lot of courage to stick to certain principles when rest of the world is against you.
• By following his principles we can save our world and make it the most peaceful and beautiful place to live in.
