Provided vs Providing

Provided vs Providing

Both of these words are subordinating conjunctions and hence interchangeable when used to convey the same meanings.

Provided: It is usually used to express condition replacing the clause “as long as” to show that one thing can be possible only if the other condition is taken care of. It also means ‘to give’.

For example:

1. The basketball match shall begin in one hour provided that it does not rain today.

2. Provided the homework is finished before dinner, you are allowed to go partying with your friends tonight.

3. Stella was ready with her presentation despite being provided lesser time than required.

4. Now that the company is provided with the raw materials, there is no reason why the work should not start instantly.

Providing: Though ‘providing’ is usually used to show that something is given to someone, yet it is absolutely correct if you use it to express conditions.

For example:

1. Simply providing the plants with water and fertilizer is not enough if it doesn’t get proper sunlight.

2. The school shall be providing the necessary equipments for the laboratory practical classes for seniors.

3. It was very clear that the aloofness grew stronger between them and she will attend the function providing that he is not invited.

4. The basketball match shall begin in one hour providing that it does not rain today.
