Question: Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), a centrally sponsored scheme, was launched instead of Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA). Provide an overview of the scheme.
• Under this scheme, there is construction of a sports complex in each block of the nation for outdoor and indoor sports disciplines at cost of INR 1.60 crore
• There is also provision of INR 15 lakh for sports equipment and
• INR 1.5 lakh for furniture provided by Department of Sports
• 6545 blocks in 634 districts will be covered over 5 years
• Under the Abhiyaan, the following sports competitions have been conducted at block, district, national and state levels:
- Rural Sports Competitions
- Sports Competitions only for Women
- North East Games
- Sports Competitions for LWE Affected Areas
• RGKA aims for providing universal access to sports in rural parts and promotion of sports culture among youth
• It also focuses on hardening available potential sporting talent among rural youngsters through competitions from block level onwards
• Identifying and nurturing sports talent from rural areas is yet another aim
Facts and Stats
• Annual rural sports competitions were conducted in 22 states in 2014-2015 and around INR 83.84 crore was released for this
• Total of 7666 athletes participated at national level
• Inadequate rural sports infrastructure has been overhauled through this scheme
• Creation of sports infrastructure as well as better sports facilities are another goal of this scheme
