Brisbane Decider: An 83rd Title For Federer
The current world number 2’s triumph at the Brisbane International Men’s Final is victory number 1000. Federer went on at the age of 33 to record his 1000th career win by laying claim to his maiden Brisbane title, beating world number 8 Milos Raonic of Canada. The Canadian fought valiantly, but the Swiss sensation proved invincible. At 6-4, 6-7 (7-2), 6-4, Federer became the third person to have such a high tally. Two tennis greats, America’s Jimmy Connors at 1253 wins and Czech tennis ace Ivan Lendl at 1071 had more than a 1000 victories during the ATP Tour history.
Big Four Far From Outnumbered
After third seed Raonic had insisted along with Kei Nishikori that the days of the Big 4 were numbered, Federer went on to show that when it comes to the numbers, no one can hope to outpace him. The big Four comprise Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. But the young guns Nishikori, Cilinc, Raonic and Dimitrov are right behind. The Doha based Qatar Open was another reminder of this when Nadal and Djokovic suffered losses. But Federer had kept the flag flying high and this is what makes tennis one of the greatest games in the world right now.
Beating John Millman in just 5 games in two matches before facing up to the challenge that Raonic threw was all in a day’s work for Federer. Now Federer has also notched victories in 29 cities across the world in his amazing career. With one win in the Land Down Under, Federer seems poised for another one soon.
Raonic Breaks a Record Too
Raonic, 24 fought on in the Brisbane International men’s final to become the first Canadian for finishing the year in the top 10 after a stellar year in 2014 where he made it to the Wimbledon semi-finals and French Open quarters.
Records Galore for Federer
During the Open era, Federer’s winning percentage is an amazing 81.5% and a staggering 737 of his victories have come in straight sets. Federer has also beaten most opponents from France (111 for the record) than any other nation. Andy Roddick has been bested by Federer a total of 21 times.
Special Moment, Record Win
Federer described his win as a “special” one and said "I've played a lot of tennis over the years, to get to 1000 match wins right here tonight in front of you guys, it really means a lot to me, and I'll never forget this match, clearly, so thank-you.” He also said regarding his younger adversary that "Great things ahead for you, and I hope also you get to 1000 match wins, have a wonderful career and you can still walk when you're my age."
"It feels very different to any other match I've ever won, because I never thought about anything, reaching 500 or 800," Federer also said.
"All those numbers didn't mean anything to me, but for some reason 1000 means a lot because it's such a huge number. Just to count to 1000 is going to take a while. Yeah, it's funny emotions right now, but clearly very proud and happy,” the Swiss tennis ace also shared.
