Should Indian Officials have registered a protest against controversial loss of Sarita Devi?

Winning and Losing is a part of the game. But, if someone losses due to cheating and biasness of referees than it devastates a player’s moral as well as the game’s credibility. Same thing happens with Sarita Devi in semifinal bout of women’s boxing. Though she lost the match, but the unexpected absence of Indian officials during her protest against the decision was even more hurting. Officials are like parents to the players; if they don’t come forward in the time of distress then who else can these players rely upon. The point of argument is should a protest be registered by Indian officials in this particular case?

Yes:

-Even though the rules don’t allow any change in decision, still Indian officials should have reached to Sarita Devi, consoled her and might have registered a verbal complaint or protest to manifest their displeasure.

-No monetary assistance was provided to Sarita to register her protest. Sarita collected the 500 USD fees necessary to lodge the protest. At least then the officials should have come forward to support her effort.

-It’s the duty as well as moral responsibility of the officials to come forward and support the players under such circumstances; otherwise the players feel neglected ant this thinking will be detrimental to their future performance.

-In India players have to struggle at every stage i.e. struggle for training, basic facilities etc. If players have to struggle to lodge a formal protest instead of officials then how can these officials’ hopes of gold medal winning performance from the players.

- Good players need a lot of support from the country to get a gold medal. Such instances would demotivate other people from taking sports as their profession.

No:

- Even though the judge’s decision was clearly biased, it cannot be challenged because the rules provide that under no circumstances judge’s decision can be challenged or repealed.

-The match referee too showed her biasness, but the protest against her decision will only be if she had committed any technical errors. But during the whole match she didn’t commit any technical errors.

-Sarita Devi should have met the Indian officials first and then perhaps a protest can be logged. This might have given the protest more support and strength. But, instead she logged the protest on her own undermining the official’s importance.

-Also, this has not been the first such case. During London Olympics an Indian boxer too had lost his bout owing to a controversial decision. But at that time a formal procedure was followed to lodge the protest after proper consultation, which was absent in this case.

Conclusion:

The unfair decision and attitude of officials has generated a strong resentment within the country. The players are competing for India’s pride and glory. So, the people are considering this decision as an insult to the country. In spite of the fact that rules are unfavouring for Indian protest in this particular case, the much needed official support may have proven a morale booster for Devi and she might not have felt so cheated and devastated.

  • This is not a place where we need to discuss whether Sarita Devi should have protested first and officials to join her or she should have first seek the officials’ consent before heading a protest. We are into the time when we found a controversial decision being protested by the player and the absence of the officials at the scene of play. When we observe this wholesome picture, we can just make out the confidence and reliability of the coach and officials on their players.

Players die hard to achieve success. It is great challenge in India to come upto the International Meet especially for the women, where the women tournaments are least supported and encouraged. In such a case, even though the decision could not be changed, the officials should have acted as a single unit before the world. Instead of leaving the player to fight their own struggle, if they would have helped her in her protest, then the world would have definitely appreciated our much claimed unity . leaving on such a wide stage without any sort of emotional, moral or monetary support was nothing more than a ruthless play.

Officials are there to coach the players and guide them with the process and procedures. Even if a player does anything wrong on the stage, the officials should not express their temper in front of the world. Rather these are the intricacies to be discussed later with the player when alone. Officials are the only support to rely up on on the International front, and the officials should have been with Sarita Devi at the time of her protest. They could have explained her the pros and cons of the protest later after supporting her in the public.

In short, the behaviour of the officials seems to be as of the hostel warden towards the orphaned child, without any ownership, reliability or confidence, which remain the basis of working as a team or a unit.
