Should red cards be used in Cricket?

Red Card, the term is nothing new for the people who are fond of watching rugby and football. People never associate red card with cricket or other sports. There is no such practice of issuing red or yellow cards in cricket. However, the recent Kieron Pollard and Mitchell Starc case in the IPL match is attracting controversies of using the red cards in Cricket. The famous cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle supports the implementation of red cards in cricket. What is your perspective on the matter?

Yes

• There is always a probability of major fight arising between the players even in cricket. There is no problem in using the red cards in severe cases.

• The physical fights have not happened in cricket till this time doesn’t guarantees that it will not happen in the future. The generation of today is low on patience.

• There are times when the warnings and fine becomes immaterial for the cricketers. They can be controlled only when they have the fear of not playing the game.

• The fight between Pollard and Starc highlights the changes that can be seen in the cricket in the coming time. Measures need to be taken to control the aggression.

• Now there are so many different types of cricket played IPL, T 20 and so on. The form of game has changed, so rules can be modified too.

• All the current punishments are carried out after the game is over. There is no code of conduct to control the aggression in the real time.

No

• There are enough punishments in the cricket codes of conduct to implement discipline and grace in the game.

• Cricket is not a contact support and therefore, as a rule it does not require any change in codes of conduct.

• Cricketers just show the aggression in the form of staring and verbal attacks. The case of Pollard is just an exception and do not requires any immediate change in the rules.

• Red cards implementation can just change the game of cricket as team can lose a valuable batsman, bowler or the fielder in the course of game.

• Even the viewers enjoy the simple aggression in the cricket and make it a part of the game. It makes cricket all more interesting to the viewers.

Conclusion

Cricket is known as a Gentleman’s game. There is hardly any threat of serious physical injury caused by players to each other. Therefore, implementing the red cards is not called at the moment. However, with the changing time, players are getting more aggressive. They earn millions in the form of advertisements and sponsorships. The fine is no effective solution for such players. There is a need to find some effective punishments to address the issue of on-field aggression displayed by cricketers.

  • I think there is should be no objection if i would say there is no harm if we introduce red cards in Cricket with proper rules and regulation. Yes It 's true that the interaction of players in cricket is not same as in football or rugby but we have to be ready for the worst scenario.

But the rules and regulation of Red Cards must be different in Cricket than football and should be more valuable as per the cricket game.

What would happen the probability of giving red cards in Cricket would be far less than Football but it would be good to have something for worst scenario.

  • It would be a correct move to introduce red card in cricket as well. With high level of cricket fans streaming up every day, there definitely need to have a strict code of conduct in order to have a fair play on the pitch. The arena which is meant to play should be headed with a sportsman spirit rather than as a place to take out personal revenge in a nasty layout.

Cricket has no rule like red card as of now. But with many changes in the game with the introduction of the league matches, there need to be some amendment in the rules for the code of conduct as well. The players are humans and there is always a possibility of the behavioural issues coming up any time. Such issues need to be sorted out at the time of the heated argument.

Players in cricket are yet not familiar to any rule like getting them off-field with embarrassment. Such a strict action may lead the players to walk on the track. Expelling a player out of the game without a replacement could be the best possible action against the on-pitch behaviour issues and conduct. The fear of expelling should be there in their minds to restrict them to remain within their limits at the time of play.
