Should Saturday be declared as Sports Day in schools?
Should Saturday be declared as Sports Day in schools?
Sports play an important role in children’s lives. It is a way to keep the children physically active. It provides a change from the hectic study schedule. There are some schools who understand the importance of the sports while there are some who consider it as a waste of time. The same thing applies for parents too. However, the new HRD Smriti Irani has proposed to declare Saturday as sports day in schools. However is it necessary that Saturday should only be the sports day?
Yes
• Saturday is the last working day of the week and therefore, it should be made as a Sport day in school.
• Many schools follow a five day working schedule, and therefore it will be the best thing to have sports day on Saturday.
• Children will be motivated to study hard for the entire week to get a complete sports day at the weekend.
• The good things should come after the hard work. Also, it inculcates discipline and positive change in the children.
• Keeping a sports day in the middle of week or at the start of the week can negatively affect the mood of children towards studies.
No
• Schools should have the freedom to decide the sports day as per their resources and convenience.
• Why only Saturday is to be kept as sports day and not the other days of the week. There is no logical explanation.
• The idea of keeping Saturday as a sports day can only be implemented in the schools run by the HRD ministry.
• There are many schools that follow the five day working schedule and allow students to rest on Saturday. Making it a sport day will hamper the working of schools.
• Schools keep on making the changes as per the requirement. The compulsory Sports day on Saturday is not a good idea during the exams time.
Conclusion
Sports are important, not the sports day. All the schools should have the flexibility to select a sports day. The same rule doesn’t works for all the academic institutions. However, if a fixed day is kept, the schools will understand the importance of sports. Saturday or some other week day, the key is balancing the studies and sports well. Any part should not suffer because of the second part.

- Does it mean that no other day should be having a sports provision in the table? No, i second my view of promoting sports as an everyday affair that should be adopted with all enthusiasm. Sports not only is essential for physical fitness but also nurtures other skills like leadership, sync, intellect etc. which might be developed only with regular practice and consistent efforts from the students which might fade away if only a day once a week is termed .

- Devoting a whole day for support is not good. In order to be fit, daily exercise is essential. So rather than devoting the whole Saturday, one hour daily should be held for play which should be more beneficial for keeping the growth and physical growth of the student.

- We are very much lack behind in sports than compare to other countries . we guys just focused on the study part . so the step taken by the HRD minister seems good bcz saturday is the last working day of the week and by deciding it as a sports day gives opportunity to the children to play well & to know well about the sports. It wiil also reduces the burden of a lot of study by having a day for sport in a week .

- Sports is an important activity in the children’s schedule. But the sports should be involved into their schedule on a regular basis, instead of allocating one compulsory day to have some run around. Every activity needs to be balanced in life.
The children might love to have a break for an hour or so, during their tiresome study periods on regular basis. this could help to freshen their mind and thoughts and rejuvenate their energy level to concentrate on studies. But advocating one single day for sports would be a tiresome job. It wouldn’t be fun for the student, instead would be a sort of punishment especially in summer weather.
The life seem to have some balance with respect to the activities. Too much of anything is hazardous, so is the sports. A sports day calls for the competition and not a recreation. A competition is definitely more a commitment than a means of enjoyment. Hence, it couldn’t be a welcome move to turn a single day to Sports Day.
