Should Sony pull off "The Interview" due to hacker's threats?

Introduction:

The hacker threats to pull Sony's politica comedy "The Interview" has been defied and Google has released it for rent and streaming on Google Play and YouTube. Talking of freedom of speech, there is indeed no stopping the release of any such fictional work and to succumb to such threats by anonymous groups such as this North Korean group - The Guardians of Peace.

Yes, Sony should have pulled the release:

1. The content of the film relates to the assassination of Kim Jong-Un, which is a serious matter and might hurt the sentiments of a large section of people. In the very first place Sony should have been responsible in designing the plot of the movie.

2. If the impact of the release of a movie could go to the extent of harming lives of people like threat to it's employees and hacking threats, it is only wise that the release should have been pulled off.

3. Freedom of speech needs to have its limits and movies meant for entertainment purposes should not promote such contents such as assassination.

4. Losing millions is less painful than loss of lives. This incident would also be a lesson to the directors of movies warning them to be wiser while choosing the content and plot of a movie.

5. Major theaters could never risk the lives of people and their reputation for that matter of fact.

6. Movies promoting terror and assassination should be pulled off generally and this movie is clearly one of the worst in this category.

No, Sony should not pull the release:

1. There have been such threats before and this is sort of becoming a pattern that everyone will soon be following if they feel their interests are at stake. Giving up to such threats will only encourage these GOPs and there will be more to come in days ahead.

2. It is a movie and movies are meant for fictional entertainment. There is absolutely no point in reacting like this to the release of a movie. These terror groups have always something or the other to condemn and this movie is just one they found in time of idleness.

3. Sony has million at stake and pulling the release of this movie must have cost them a huge loss. Instead of giving up to these terror attacks, Sony should have gone ahead with the plan. It's high time these terrorists be answered for their worthless agendas.

4. Sony is not liable for security issues or incidents that happen at the theaters. It is absolute cowardice to blame Sony for deeds of these terror groups. Whether or not people like a movie is a different matter but banning it in theaters is not justified.

5. This is not the first time that North Korea made such outlandish threats. Instead of being a coward to the threat and pulling off the movie, America should have taken a stand against these threats.

Conclusion:

No doubt these threats are inhuman and should not be encouraged with pulling down of movies at major theaters across the country. Security should have been increased and the movie should have been released all over America. However, this does not justify Sony's irresponsible act of putting such plots into a movie meant for worldwide release. Filmmakers should be wise in deciding upon the scripts and making sure that it does not promote such heinous crimes.

  • Pulling off the movie would be a sensible move. It is understandable that movies are meant for entertainment. But, when the scenario becomes as serious as having a threat of hacking, then it would be advisable to pull off the movie rather than welcoming some more serious complications to the lives of many.

Sony should not have touched the controversial issues to the movie. There had been many similar incidents in the past, but it is more preferred to learn from the past and avoid similar accidents in future. Nobody expects to enter into any sort of controversies or conflicts and reach such a critical situation. Still, it would be always wise to avoid such incidents.

It is very obvious that Sony would have to face heavy loss in case they go ahead with the release of the movie and the theatres entertaining the movie would be further more difficult having such threat of hacking into play. Still, the loss of money would be a lot better over any other serious consequences. And not only Sony, but everyone should be careful regarding their choice of the subject for the movie. Hence, in any way it would be preferable if Sony pulls off “The Interview”.
