Soft skills development should be the focus of MBA courses
A degree in Masters in Business Administration has become one of the most sought after career options for students. From engineers to commerce students, everybody has jumped on to the bandwagon of pursuing an MBA. The handsome pay packages that come along with fast pace growth in corporate life lure millions of students to opt for MBA. The trend has witnessed only a surge in the last decade. While a degree in MBA teaches students core subjects such as accountancy, finance, marketing, HR amongst others, what differentiates businesses and defines their success is their ability to communicate with people.
Hence, communicating rightly is extremely critical for the success of MBA students and soft skills need to be a part of the student’s curriculum for enhancing their skills. It is essential for students to understand the importance of communication besides the business acumen that the course teaches them.
While a lot of attention is paid to the core subjects being taught in the rigorous year long or two year long MBA courses, none of it pays attention to the communication aspect of students. A chunk of the students who make it to the top institutes are pass outs from India’s cream colleges such as the IIT’s, Pilani and Delhi College of Engineering amongst other engineering colleges of the country.
A large majority of students who take admission straight after finishing their engineering or other bachelor course only end up only revising English for cracking an examination and gaining admission to a good institute. However, the foundation of effective communication gets sidelined and students compete for the best scores during their two year stint at the management colleges.
In order to ensure that students do not get a rude shock when they step out into the real world and notice that more than the knowledge, what would matter is good communication which would help them during the daily grinding of the job. Although, this cannot be learnt in classes, but like case studies help students in better understanding of company, its strategy as well as its financials, some case studies demonstrating effective use of communication can go a long way in ameliorating their existing soft skills.
Even though some specific courses such as Marketing and Advertising do specifically make students polished in terms of soft skills, all institutes need to introduce soft skills as a separate subject. The subject should be a part of the basic curriculum for all the students no matter what electives are chosen by them in the second year.
This would not only result in augmenting efficiency of businesses but also help in faster growth of individuals who may lag behind only due to ineffective communication skills.

Soft skills development should be the focus of MBA courses
For 100% success rate an individual needs to possess 35% hard skill and 65% soft skill. Without the achievement of this equation, it is very tough in today’s competitive world to outperform your competitor.
Hard skills are those skills which are associated with learning. It is linked with the left side of the brain and works with logic and analytical thinking. It requires immense amount of brainpower and intelligence. While on the other hand, soft skills are dominated by the right side of the brain. These set of skills include personality traits, motivating behavior, self confidence, communication skills and emotional intelligence. It is linked with holistic thinking and helps us in achieving our organizational goals both in personal and professional lives.
Since for complete success soft skills should be stressed upon, all the business schools in the world are shifting their focus from hard skills to soft skills. For a MBA course, the acquisition of soft skill is a must. Just being able to write a report or prepare a presentation is not enough. With research and time put in mostly all can manage that; but what is essential is the style of presentation. One needs to be able to present his work effectively and should be able to answer all on spot questions by engaging his audience. This is what distinguishes him from the rest of the crowd and will make him stand out.

MBA courses should definitely make the development of soft skills an essential part of their curriculum. At the end of the day, it is the personality and the capability of the student apart from his technical skills which will make him unique. Possessing good communication skills is a mandatory part of every individual. If you are not able to communicate with your seniors and juniors in your company you will not be able to align your organizational goal with your personal goals. In order to do perform successfully and win your boss’s confidence you need to have impressive communication skills.
Level of engagement
Interaction with your peers and other members is a quality every individual should possess. The best feedback one can receive after his presentation is the level of engagement of his audience. This is a challenge which everyone faces in today’s world where people don’t want to read or listen to long texts. They want to hear crisp and to the point facts which will attract their attention and make them excited.
All these interpersonal skills are a part of soft skills set and are essential for every manager to possess. For this reason all the MBA courses should definitely focus on the development of it to make their students bright in each and every field so that they can outshine the rest in the crowd.
