Spice Jet entertaining its customers with HOLI performances on board – was it right?
This Holi was really special for the passengers flying in Spice Jet SG 876 Goa-Bangalore on 17th March. SpiceJet’s cabin crew danced on the rocking song, the famous Bollywood chartbuster “Balam Pichkari” at the time when the flight was 35000 feet up in the air.
During this time the pilots were busy taking pictures of the show performance on their mobile phones.
Well the motive of the performance was to entertain the guests on the occasion of Holi but has resulted in a debate - was it right for the crew members get into a dancing mood while in air?
Yes
• It was a good attempt by the Spice jet members to make the air travel less dreary. In hospitality industry such kind of events are required to entertain their guests.
• There are many international airlines who keep certain events on board, like birthday parties and fashion shows.
• It was a planned event and therefore had extra crew to look after the safety issues during the event time.
• There was no problem if the pilot was not in the cockpit as the co-pilot was in the command of the flight at that time.
• On a Helsinki to New Delhi Finnair flight on January 17, 2012, cabin crew members performed on Om Shanti Om to celebrate 63rd Republic day of India and to show the Indian passengers that they know and care about their culture.
No
• It was against the rules and regulations led by DGCA and therefore SpiceJet has been issued a show cause notice for the dance performance.
• As per the DGCA it was not safe for the passengers. There was the probability of dance affecting negatively on the center of gravity of the aircraft.
• The event witnessed the violation of technical rules. The use of mobiles is strictly prohibited inside the flight.
• The involvement of the cockpit crew in such kind of events is not safe. Even if the co-pilot was in command of the flight then too there is a reason why every plane has two pilots at the same time.
• There is another question whether the dance performance was done willingly by the air hostesses or was the compulsion to save their job in airline industry.
• It was not a way to add value and in no way a part of customer service. All the passengers are different and you cannot make them bear anything just because you think it to be entertaining. Celebration or services should not be forced upon the passengers.
Conclusion
There is nothing wrong in organizing the planned events and celebrations in the Air flights to keep the passengers entertained but the thing is all factors like passenger’s preference, safety issues, rules and regulations etc should be given due importance before the events are planned and implemented in real time.

- Entertainment does not mean breaking up the rules and playing with the safety concern of all the passengers on the flight. People boarding the flight would prefer safety more in comparison to the entertainment and dance show. though the passengers in the flight were missing their precious hour on the festive day, still a pilot and the crew members dancing and entertaining during the flight, is sheer negligence and completely unacceptable.
Also, the festival is not celebrated in all parts of India, so it’s not necessary for the people to enjoy the show. not everyone is fond of music and dance, and passengers might not feel all that comfortable with the loud music. Again, when the passengers are asked to switch off the mobile phone during the flight, it is highly objectionable for the pilot to disobey the guidelines and safety norms.
