SunEdison and Omnigrid Micropower Company Sign Pact For Developing Solar Energy Projects

SunEdison and Omnigrid Micropower Company have signed an agreement for developing 5,000 solar energy projects and 250 MW of electricity throughout the nation over a period of the next 3 to 5 years.

Sun Is The Key

OMC or Omnigrid Micropower Company specialises in small scale power plants with renewable sources. It is going to work for developing electricity in areas where there is no reliable power grid. “This partnership will quickly bring electricity to 10 million additional people. The partnership leverages the expertise of each company, including technical know-how, local and telecom knowledge from OMC and project development and financing expertise from SunEdison. SunEdison and OMC have an offering that can help telecommunication organisations meet their regulatory requirements and provide energy to local communities while still going off-grid,” an official statement from SunEdison indicated.

MoU Signed For Developing Solar Energy

The MoU for the development of 5,000 rural solar power projects was signed by Ahmad Chatila, President and CEO of SunEdison as well as Sushil Jiwarjka, Co-founder and Chairman of OMC on 10th January 2015 in Ahmedabad. This is in conjunction with the ongoing Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

“SunEdison is currently building 60 mini grids across India - this initiative will further accelerate our efforts towards the Prime Minister's Energy Vision of making electricity available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Pashupathy Gopalan, President of SunEdison’s Asia Pacific Operations has been quoted as saying.

"While 1GW of coal power plant can take three to four years to develop, nuclear power of similar capacity can take five to 10 years, solar photovoltaic power can be developed less than a year", SunEdison, President and CEO, Ahmad Chatila commented in a statement released to the media. He also indicated that over 400 million people in India lack access to electricity and resort to costly fossil fuel based solutions. SunEdison and OMC will leverage the expertise of the companies including local and telecom knowledge as well as technical know-how from the latter and financial expertise form the former. The Co-founder of OMC Power, Anil Raj has been quoted as saying that,

"Our agreement with SunEdison is a huge step forward both for our company and for the people of rural India.”
