First For Federer: Swiss Tennis Star Wins His Fourth Title In First Shanghai Masters Victory

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer has just garnered his fourth title this year, after having won the Shanghai Masters Open which is the biggest tennis tournament in Asia. Federer had a rocky start in the tournament. He had 57 unforced errors against player Leonardo Mayer during the second round and had to fight off a grand total of 5 match points before pulling through to win the game. CBC News reported how four days after this hard fought victory, Federer gained his fourth title with a 7-6(6) and 7-6(2) victory over French player Gilles Simon in the final of the match held on Sunday, October 11th, 2014.

"I got very, very lucky," Federer was quoted by CBC as having said "I know what a privilege it is to be here today.” A loss to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon finals had been a tough loss for Federer. Despite this, the Swiss tennis sensation did not give up and the results are there for everyone to see. Federer leads the tour in the season with 61 match wins and 13 top 10 wins as well as 9 final appearances. He will now reach number two in the rankings in the first time for a long time now, as a result of this impressive performance.

"The biggest concern was to be healthy this year. That's something I'm just so pleased about, to see that the hard work I put in last year is paying off. Not only is it paying off, but I'm feeling good, I'm waking up normal. I'm not half broken like I was last year. I'm enjoying myself on the tennis court," he was also quoted as saying "I'm playing the way I was hoping I could play again."

Extremely breezy conditions ensured that the roof of the match was closed, but Federer showed that sky is the limit when it comes to top performance from talented and determined players. His adversary Simon was quoted as saying "He still has the same strengths, this fantastic serve and this huge forehand. Now I know him, so I'm not scared anymore when I have to play him. But it's still so hard to beat him."

"To win the biggest tournament in Asia is a treat," Federer was quoted by the BBC as saying. "I got lucky to come through the first round after saving five match points. It's been a dream week." For Simon, this is the second defeat in a Master's Final, the loss to Murray in Madrid in 2008 being his first. Interestingly, Federer too lost his final match in this tournament to Murray in 2010.

But this time the Grand Slam winner came through with a victory in one hour 52 minutes. This is a major victory for Federer who has battled a lot of adversity this year to reach ATP World Number 2 rank. Simon can also look forward to more matches to test his mettle. It was a riveting match between the two opponents from the start to the finish.
